#6 cylinder dead
I have a 1998 E 300 Turbo diesel. Today as I stepped on the accelerator, the trans downshifted into passing gear, and I heard a couple of valves claking, and lost power. The clacking stopped after 10 seconds. I got back to my garage, and I cracked the injector nuts loose one by one, and # 6 cylinder is dead. When I drive the car it smokes blue. No noise, but very rough idle. Could this just be an injector? Does this engine use hydraulic lifters? I just lost my job, and I am scared I might have major damage

Do a compression test on 6!!
The lifters are hydraulic.
Blue smoke incomplete combustion!

#6 has no compression. Are the valves noted to break, or hang up? It is almost like the top of the piston broke off. Can a piston be replaced without pulling the engine?

Do a leak down and that will be able to further tell you where the pressure loss is ie. rings, valves, etc.
Yes, a piston can be replaced without pulling the engine, but ALOT is going to have to come apart in order to do so regardless of what route you go. IMO, i would pull it, and freshen up the whole thing while it is apart.
Good luck.

I pulled the intake, and exhaust. I turned it over till the exhaust valves were open, and then took my inspection camera and looked into the cylinder. I still do not know what happened but I have shiny damage to the top of the piston. The camera is just a hair too big to get past the valve. I have recently lost my job, so it looks like # 6 is the only cylinder thats going to get refreshed. I can't see how the pan can come off. This is a 1998 300 E turbo diesel. All your help is highly appreciated.

I need a cylinder head for a 98 300 e turbo diesel. Can someone point me in the right direction to buy one? The pre cup chamber broke, and ruined the head , and piston.

I would check the national scrappers like LQK or is it LKQ or whatever!!PS: I would also do a parts "where used" check in EPC. The head may have been used on a couple of model numbers--broadens the scope!! Good Luck
