Exclamation Something is wrong.....

So I was driving on the highway for about 40 minutes, and got off the exit, came to a full stop, and the car died as I came to a full stop. So I started it back on, and it made a grinding noise, and died again. (By now I could smell some kind of burned smell)I turned the radio off, AC off, lights, everything off, started back on again, started fine. Yay, I was happy!! Turned the headlights back on, radio, AC, and it died again, with the same grinding noise.

So now every time I turn the AC on, it makes a grinding noise, and kills the engine right away. Takes about a second or so for the A/C to shut off the engine.

My first thing was the A/C compressor. I am not a mechanic, so is that possible? Can be other things? Any help would be helpful.

**UPDATE: YouTube Video

It sounds possibly like a seized AC compressor.

If your AC comp is that fried, the EC light ought to be lit up permanently telling you there is a fault in the system.

If your Alt went out, the battery light on the dash should be lit up.

Judging from the video it's the AC compressor. It is seized up, and the smoke is from your v-belt running alcross the non turning pulley.

I only saw that on the video. I was inside the car, trying not to have the AC running for too long.

I will as soon as I have time. If I don't use my AC at all, it shouldn't really hurt? Or will it?

A gaggle of MB's
When you go to repair - you will save money by getting your own parts together.

1) Sanden Behr AC compressor - new - $250 - call acpartswarehouse.com to see if they have it

2) Egelhof expansion valve and o-rings $42

3) China Behr drier $22

4) Rein drier-to-condenser hose $36 -

5) Continental belt - $32 3/4/5/6 autohausaz.com

Then find a competant AC shop that will do the right work, including flushing the system, install, evac and refill -in my area about $200 labor all in.

I have found a good numenr of premature compressor failures because the accessory belt tensioner is failing - Litens OE replacement (cheap China tensioners are junk) for $110 - easy DIY or free replacement labor from the aircon guy since the belt is off anyway.
