Rear diff noise when lift off the gas?
Hiya guys. Have a 00 E320 4 Matic. when I'm driving the car on he gas there is no noise or problem. When I'm driving and lift off the gas to coast I have a noise coming from the rear of the car. Sounds like maybe a diff noise but hard to tell. It has a groan like sound that goes away as soon as I get back on the gas. Not real loud but loud enough to be bothersome/worrysome. Any ideas? Rear diff? Driveshaft U joint? Thanks for ideas guys.

Out Of Control!!
Why seattle sam the issue----put the car on a lift and your mechanic will quickly find the source------without that my guess is the rear ash try is full or you have too much beer in the trunk!!

Okay!
Ok, as per your advice I emptied the rear ashtray. I also drank all the beer that was in the trunk as well. I guess I'll try swapping the muffler pump from front to rear, changing the taillight fluid has not seemed to help at all, and I know my door hinge flabber gear is centered on the lower control brake. Just trying to get some ideas.

Ideas are good, however just think of all the turning surfaces behind the engine. That coupled with the fact that sound is transmitted(travels) throughout the car.
At this point you know all those turning surfaces, but which one is making the noise, from my vantage point a credible answer to your question would be impossible without listining to the duplicated sound and pinpointing the suspected area.

Wheel bearing?
I'm starting to wonder if it can be a wheel bearing. Sounds like a droning noise. Wondering if letting off the gas unloads the bearing and causes the noise. Gonna put not up and get a better look tomorrow. Thanks

Noise from rear
Hi guys, After getting the car on the lift I found that my problem was a rear wheel bearing. Replaced both sides and problem was solved. Good luck to all.

tips. Maybe...
Get the car on a lift and manually spin the rear wheels. Listen for any creaking and popping noises even very light ones. You can also grab the wheel at 3 and 9oclock with your hands and see if it has any wiggle or play in it. Hope that helps.
