Getting aftermarket headunit 98 w210 e320 (bose)
The cassette deck doesn't work on my radio (a/b flip flop then eject issue) and they are telling me the repair is going to cost around $140. Everything else works fine (cd, radio etc) but I am thinking I can just put that kind of money in a good head unit like a sony or something with ipod control and just swap it out. Is it ok to swap these units with aftermarket or are they prone to issue and if not any suggestions as to one that will give the best performance. I am not looking for anything crazy just aux in (ipod/iphone control would be great). My car has the stock bose system if that makes a difference.

You can swap something in pretty easily. You don't have steering wheel buttons to integrate, so that makes it easy. Pretty much any stereo can work. There are some W210 install threads that can show you what parts you need (such as the Metra VW harness).

harness: 70-1786
antenna adapter: 40-vw10
You're also going to need European radio keys, available on EBay for a few bucks.

I found this, they say they include everything needed for the install in my exact car. Is this a good deal? http://www.crutchfield.com/p_130X750...H-X7500HD.html

Sonic Electronix has it for $10 less, free shipping, and installation accessories.

Thanks for the link. Does this look like a good deal will it fit with the Bose setup? I'm open to suggestion this is one of the first I saw. Also it sounds like it comes with everything I need ( the universal key etc).

FYI - I replaced my headunit with a nice Alpine from Bestbuy. It has bluetooth which works great for hands free phone and listening to music, etc.... the radio was around $180 and with install, harness, etc.. around $300 for everying, including the bluetooth MIC install by the visor.

Are there any forums on how to do the install yourself. This would be my first install should I leave it to the professionals?

Can you change your oil? Program your VCR... er, Apple TV? If so, you can probably do it. Just read the DIYs and ask any questions. Also get the right tools, like crimp connectors (if you want to go back to stock radio) or butt splices (if you will leave it after market) and a crimping tool. You can find this stuff online or even at Lowes. With the right tools and following a guide, it is easy.

https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...t-hu-bose.html has all info. Even less work and expense without steering wheel controls.
