Short circuit on fuse 11 on rear fuse box

Hi everyone, as you see I'm new to this forum.

I joined mainly because of issues I've been having with a 1999 E220 CDI Avantgarde estate (model W210.206). I do know it's not a common model in the US, given your cheaper fuel prices, a 2.2L diesel on such a heavy car really makes no sense.

I have mechanical experience, having maintained this car almost since new.
I also own an Alfa Romeo 164 Turbo, 2.0L, 4C and it's has a special place, so to say, and several Citroens: ZX 1.4i and 1.9D, Saxo VTS, C15 panel van, etc.

So, the issue with the W210 at the moment is that the 7.5A fuse #11 at rear fuse box (under seat) blew. Below the fuse, there are two terminals each with two blue and red (?) striped wires. One of these terminals shorts to ground.

I disconnected the shorted terminal from fusebox and left the one connecting to the sunroof there. This stopped the fuse from blowing.

For now, I've only noticed that the alarm motion sensors are not working, presumably not getting power due to the disconnected wire. What I really need is a wiring diagram to trace the wires to a faulty unit or know if there is a chaffed wire somewhere.

Any and all help will be appreciated. I tried but couldn't get diagrams of these circuits.

Unfornately the VIN you provided was not accepted ,therefore used a generic 210.206. fuse 10,11 and 12 are briged. Fuse 11 has nothing to do with he sun roof. It fuses the interiorsensor of the antitheft system. FYI the are over 200 wiring diagrams for the W210 and I did not have time to go further. You need a person who has a european subscription to WIS to help you

There must be something wrong. There are no other fuses on that block, the fuse chart says fuse 11 powers the sunroof and alarm. It couldn't connect to fuses that are not there and have no wiring.

Just knowing where they go to and what path they follow would be great.

Where are the alarm control units? Where do the motion sensors connect to?

Thanks for your time and help.

Yes there is! That is why I asked for the correct VIN------simular model cars are wired very differently!!!

Lets just clarify----The rear fuse strip is under the rear seat of the vehicle----is that where you have looked?? If that is the case-----please list the fuses that are installed in the rear fuse block. Please include the fuse that you removed!!

To make sure we will start over!!

I took the VIN from a dealership invoice I had at hand. I just confirmed on the chassis: WDB2102061A922276.
The fuse box I referred to is the one by the battery, under right rear seat.

It contains following fuses:
1 - 20A
2 - 20A
3 - 7.5A
4 - 25A
5 - 25A
7 - 20A
11 - 7.5A

And two 40A fuses, one numbered 20 and the other has no number.

Connecting to fuse 11 are two terminals, each with 2 thin striped wires, RED AND BLUE with YELLOW marks.

One of these terminals is shorted to ground. I disconnected that shorted terminal and left the other one connected. This got the sunroof working but the motion sensors don't work.

So, the origin of the short should be either on the units the shorted terminal connects to or in the wiring. I just need to know where the wire goes to and how it gets there.

Yes the second VIN was correct and I was able to understand the issue via WIS.

The two number 11 fuse wires are numbered 11a and 11b. 11a a red blue and yellow wire connects to the inclination sensor(the anti tow portion of the theft system). That sensor is apart of the PSE pump(under the rear seat encased in foam very close to the fuse block). 11b a red blue and yellow wire connects to the L and R motion control sensor located in the interior roof(cover snaps off and you should see the wires and sensors.

It's a shame that you do not have a DAS Xentry diagnostic set----you can do a quick test and locate the faults without all this legwork

In any event the next time you are in Porto------buy be a good glass of port wine!!

I did a quick check on the pump and sensors (I'll look into it better tomorrow, it's a bit late now).

One thing I didn't quite get is how the sensors are fastened. I pulled the triangular plastic cover and found no screws. Does the pillar trim have to come off to get to remove these sensors and get to the wiring?
There are two other wires connected to fuse 11, do both go to the sunroof circuit?

About electronic diagnosis, I had been looking for some diagnosis tools for my brother's W202 C180 automatic estate. He asked some sellers of cheap OBD diagnosis interfaces and could not get a straight answer if they'd work for his car. Any recommendations?

I'll buy you that glass whenever you come to these parts. I'll even buy the whole bottle!

On the interior motion sensor(interior roof) where was the wire connected to that is the sensor.(proper voltage is 11-14V)

The bad news is that the anti theft control module, which includes the inclination sensor is integrated into the PSE---if the inclination sensor is bad you have replace the PSE and then recode----the voltage test is 11-14 V

I only work on MB's therefore have a copy of the factory diagnostic software DAS Xentry----remember the anti theft system is apart of the Body CAN system and CAN NOT be diagnosed with the OBD---you need a copy of DAS Xentry or equal to do that. Check your local market

I'll try and get to the wiring on the motion sensors and pump to see what is at fault.

The OBD system we were looking for was meant for engine diagnosis mainly. My brother has had some power loss when switching from LPG to petrol at high RPM and suspects a bad coil. I can't tell if his diagnosis is right without seeing for myself.

I have seen some ads for used DAS Xentry systems and prices are around 600€ for the interface and software. Most charge about 200€ for the laptop.

I don't think it is an expensive system considering all the data that comes with it. I just think I will have no return of such an investment.

I am having a very similar issue with my 01 E320 wagon. Vin# WDBJH65J71B382629. While investigating why my ESP BAS and ABS light were lit I found fuse #11 in the fuse box located under the rear seat blown. When I replaced the fuse it immediately blew again. I removed the fuse panel to inspect the wiring and found everything was intact and no signs of moisture etc. There are 2 wires connected to one terminal and 1 additional wire attached next to it. With a meter I found both these connection were shorted directly to ground explaining why the fuse would blow. My next step is to remove the PSE pump and look for anything abnormal but I must say all my door locks, remote keyfob work as they should. I read in this thread that possibly there is some sort of alarm module located in the PSE pump housing but this is the only thread with this information. I would deeply appreciate any feedback on what the heck is going on. I will ad this car has 83k original miles and has been serviced properly AKA an unmolested very nice example. Thanks in advance, Mike
