Recent BAS ASR Problem Fixed
at least you did not fall for itsome members find it a little difficult, some say it was a cinch. But that's the way it is with evaporator sensors and a lot of other diy's,some find easy what others find tough. The main thing is you arre up 270 bucks and on your way to diy nirvana

We had a member who was not so fortunate ,bought into the blah blah blah about diagnostics and removal and replacement and parts on a p0170 and p0173 check engine light and got stuck with an $880 bill for a mass air sensor that costs 167 bucks at autohausaz.com and takes even the most inexperienced diy'r 10 minutes to remove and replace. The ecu adapts to the new one ,codes are gone, done.
Man was he peeved when he found out upon becoming a forum member. At least he won't fall for it again.

Thank you very much for the great support; I had this problem, started this Thursday, I called my mechanic and he said it is either a 15 USD part OR a 550 USD Hydraulic system, or whatever. He got me, can’t find a better expression, SCARED

He told me to come on Saturday, I live in Abu Dhabi, UAE; so Saturday is OK.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Anyway, I went to the internet, 3 hours ago, and googled my problem and ........Hurraaaai, I found you guys. After reading through the thread, I went down,a hit the brakes, started my car, and the warning did not go off, released the break paddle and immediately the warning went off.... I was sure that I am on the right track. <o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Immediately I went to the MB dealer, presented my car registration, for the chasis number, and requested the break light switch; it was 12.25 USD; Here in UAE, we don't have VAT <o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
I am a little bit overweight, so I knew that I will suffer replacing it. However, right next to the dealer there stood some technical guys, who normally change brake pads....etc. So, I told the one guy, I want you to replace this part for me; he said 20 USD, I told him that I know how to do it and how simple it is, it’s only that temperature here is around 45 degrees C; I offered 10 USD and he accepted...<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
The guy replaced the part right there, in around 8 minutes, and everything went great. No warning, no lights and cruise control is working again. <v:shape id=Picture_x0020_4 style="VISIBILITY: visible; WIDTH: 37.5pt; HEIGHT: 32.25pt; mso-wrap-style: square" alt="0" type="#_x0000_t75" o:spid="_x0000_i1025"><v:imagedata o:title="0" src="file:///C:\Users\SAMEHE~1\AppData\Local\Temp\msohtmlclip1\ 01\clip_image002.gif"></v:imagedata></v:shape><o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
If I went to my mechanic, it would have cost me no less than 150 to 200 USD, easy, including computer checks and system resetting after fixing the problem and reporting and and and and....<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Thank you guys, Thank you very much.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Sameh Eid.<o:p></o:p>

My ABS-BAS came on yesterday for the first time ever!?!?
Researched it on here .... went out a while ago and put my foot on the brake / started car (1999 C-230 Kompressor) / held foot on brake for a full minute while turning the steering wheel full lock left to right about three times.
Took off parking brake / put in gear and was off and on my way with NO warning light.
When and if it happens again I'll look for the $15 to $20 solution.
Very helpful forum to say the least....

This is the best MB forum! Thanks for the help, the problem was with the Break Light Switch as many of you stated correctly. I pulled out my bad break light switch in 5min, than I take it apart that switch and made it to work again, such an easy fix. Didn't even had to buy new one! Put my old switch back in, light are OFF and those systems are functional. It was kind of tricky to take the switch apart but if you can do it you can fix your old one, I'm pretty sure! and save the trip to MB dealership or skip the waiting time on online order and 20 bucks!
Now! Where do I find radio CODE besides going to a dealership?
Can anyone help?

Mainly upon first starting the car and driving away.
I then pull over, wait a few minutes and restart...all is well.
I'll have to try this!!!
All it took is a trip to a local MB dealership providing them a VIN number and proof of ownership (shoving them your car Title) and they give the CODE with instructions on how to entering it to validate. Very surprisingly to me that there was no charge for it! I entered it my self and it was so simple to do it and radio come ON right away. Praise God!!!

Afterwards did little research on google, and was lucky enough to end up at this forum and believe me this morning went to buy the brake light swicth which costed only 12 pounds, took my car to my local mechanic it took just 10 minutes to fix the whole crap.
everything is back to normal.thanks very much guys you all been very helpfull.
After trying the brake light switch to no avail, I had the codes scanned at a local indy shop and the lateral acceleration sensor had thrown a code. This module is part of the ESP system and is located under the carpet beneath the driver's seat. Believe it or not Mercedes wants > $2K for this module! I found it on a German used parts website for < 50 Euros
I finally got it replaced today and the annoying beeps and lights are gone
It's MB part number 000 542 65 18.
good luck!
I have the same car and the same problem. Did you got your answer? what do I have to do. Thanks a lot
i got a 1998 Mercedes E300TD and the BAS/ASR light keeps turning ON. In the center of the Dashboard, only the BAS is displayed. I have read on other forums that the brake light switch might be the problem or the voltage on the battery is low. That's not the case with my car. The BAS light only comes on when the outside temperature is below -1 degrees celsius and after a 5 minute drive. Even when it's extremely cold and i restart the car, the BAS light still comes on. I also noted that the engine's output performance is limited. When it's warm outside, the BAS never comes on. Please help me out guys.
