I
love the blah blah blah part at least you did not fall for it
some members find it a little difficult, some say it was a cinch. But that's the way it is with evaporator sensors and a lot of other diy's,some find easy what others find tough. The main thing is you arre up 270 bucks and on your way to diy nirvana
We had a member who was not so fortunate ,bought into the blah blah blah about diagnostics and removal and replacement and parts on a p0170 and p0173 check engine light and got stuck with an $880 bill for a mass air sensor that costs 167 bucks at autohausaz.com and takes even the most inexperienced diy'r 10 minutes to remove and replace. The ecu adapts to the new one ,codes are gone, done.
Man was he peeved when he found out upon becoming a forum member. At least he won't fall for it again.

Thank you very much for the great support; I had this problem, started this Thursday, I called my mechanic and he said it is either a 15 USD part OR a 550 USD Hydraulic system, or whatever. He got me, can’t find a better expression, SCARED <?xml:namespace prefix = v ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" /><v:shapetype id=_x0000_t75 stroked="f" filled="f" path="m@4@5l@4@11@9@11@9@5xe" o:preferrelative="t" o:spt="75" coordsize="21600,21600"><v:stroke joinstyle="miter"></v:stroke><v:formulas><v:f eqn="if lineDrawn pixelLineWidth 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @0 1 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum 0 0 @1"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @2 1 2"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelWidth"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelHeight"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @0 0 1"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @6 1 2"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelWidth"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @8 21600 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelHeight"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @10 21600 0"></v:f></v:formulas><v:path o:connecttype="rect" gradientshapeok="t" o:extrusionok="f"></v:path><o:lock aspectratio="t" v:ext="edit"></o:lock></v:shapetype><o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
He told me to come on Saturday, I live in Abu Dhabi, UAE; so Saturday is OK.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Anyway, I went to the internet, 3 hours ago, and googled my problem and ........Hurraaaai, I found you guys. After reading through the thread, I went down,a hit the brakes, started my car, and the warning did not go off, released the break paddle and immediately the warning went off.... I was sure that I am on the right track. <o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Immediately I went to the MB dealer, presented my car registration, for the chasis number, and requested the break light switch; it was 12.25 USD; Here in UAE, we don't have VAT <o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
I am a little bit overweight, so I knew that I will suffer replacing it. However, right next to the dealer there stood some technical guys, who normally change brake pads....etc. So, I told the one guy, I want you to replace this part for me; he said 20 USD, I told him that I know how to do it and how simple it is, it’s only that temperature here is around 45 degrees C; I offered 10 USD and he accepted...<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
The guy replaced the part right there, in around 8 minutes, and everything went great. No warning, no lights and cruise control is working again. <v:shape id=Picture_x0020_4 style="VISIBILITY: visible; WIDTH: 37.5pt; HEIGHT: 32.25pt; mso-wrap-style: square" alt="0" type="#_x0000_t75" o:spid="_x0000_i1025"><v:imagedata o:title="0" src="file:///C:\Users\SAMEHE~1\AppData\Local\Temp\msohtmlclip1\ 01\clip_image002.gif"></v:imagedata></v:shape><o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
If I went to my mechanic, it would have cost me no less than 150 to 200 USD, easy, including computer checks and system resetting after fixing the problem and reporting and and and and....<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Thank you guys, Thank you very much.<o:p></o:p>

Thanks Merc 1 for the post on the BAS ASR light. I had the problem on my 1999 CLK 200. Bought the switch from Mercedes main dealer - only £13.00, took out the old one, popped the new one in and Bob's your uncle - the annoying dashboard light has disappeared. A 20 minute job tops.

In my case (also a Diesel) I tried the brakelightswitch, the steeringwheel-alignment, had the car readout and reset. Nothing...the ABS-BAS-ASR error never went away, however my cruisecontrol was working all the time!? Replacing the battery for a Bosch Silver5 was the solution! Even while the car was preglowing and cranking fine, and there were no other errors, the battery turned out to be the culprit.

Allergic to weather!!!!
My car started having the BAS, ABS, ESP. Lights coming on and staying on after I started the car when the temperature was below 60 degrees, and once the temperature went up the malfunctions went away...Does anybody has an idea why this maybe happening????? It has been very annoying....
Thanks

This thread has covered some ground and is still helping people.
My ABS-BAS came on yesterday for the first time ever!?!?
Researched it on here .... went out a while ago and put my foot on the brake / started car (1999 C-230 Kompressor) / held foot on brake for a full minute while turning the steering wheel full lock left to right about three times.
Took off parking brake / put in gear and was off and on my way with NO warning light.
When and if it happens again I'll look for the $15 to $20 solution.
Very helpful forum to say the least....

I have been having this problem with my 1999 E300TD, The BAS/ASR light is constantly on. It comes on as soon as I begin the start-up process, regardless of the brake pedal being engaged while starting. The cruise control works. I have replaced the Brake Light switch under the pedal, but that didn't change anything. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

1999 MB E320 Sedan
1999 MB E320 Sedan 131000 ml - bought it at auto auction in Virginia when picked it up BAS/ASR lights already ON, passenger side engine mount is broken, and radio asking for CODE! I replaced engine mount-vibration gone away and car starts riding like it should. I GOOGLE BAS/ASR light and found this site.
This is the best MB forum! Thanks for the help, the problem was with the Break Light Switch as many of you stated correctly. I pulled out my bad break light switch in 5min, than I take it apart that switch and made it to work again, such an easy fix. Didn't even had to buy new one! Put my old switch back in, light are OFF and those systems are functional. It was kind of tricky to take the switch apart but if you can do it you can fix your old one, I'm pretty sure! and save the trip to MB dealership or skip the waiting time on online order and 20 bucks!
Now! Where do I find radio CODE besides going to a dealership?
Can anyone help?

My lights have come on about 5 times inthe past 3-4 months.
Mainly upon first starting the car and driving away.
I then pull over, wait a few minutes and restart...all is well.
I'll have to try this!!!

Radio CODE...
Getting the radio code was fast and easy by the way.
All it took is a trip to a local MB dealership providing them a VIN number and proof of ownership (shoving them your car Title) and they give the CODE with instructions on how to entering it to validate. Very surprisingly to me that there was no charge for it! I entered it my self and it was so simple to do it and radio come ON right away. Praise God!!!

Just wanted to post the solution to my ESP/ABS/BAS problem.
After trying the brake light switch to no avail, I had the codes scanned at a local indy shop and the lateral acceleration sensor had thrown a code. This module is part of the ESP system and is located under the carpet beneath the driver's seat. Believe it or not Mercedes wants > $2K for this module! I found it on a German used parts website for < 50 Euros I finally got it replaced today and the annoying beeps and lights are gone
It's MB part number 000 542 65 18.
good luck!

I have a brake fluid leak and my ASR light turns on at random when im driving and dont go off till i turn my car off. I have noticed the light wont come on unless i speed up quickly. I took my car to the shop and they showed me my leak was coming from behind the driver side front wheel well, there was a componant that the fluid was shooting out of the mechanic told me it was a ABS/ASR Control Module and told me it would cost $2300 for the part. I just got this 95 E420 for pretty cheap and i know it needed alittle work but i truthfully dont know if the mechanic is being 100% honest....does anyone know what part sits behind the wheel well he had to take it off to get to the part and i know it does pull fluid from the resivoir and into the lines. Thanks for any help and for reading the long post

I had the "ASR ACC. SWITCH" message and the ABS ASR lights in the far left display come on today as I went over a bump pulling into a driveway- no other discernible difference in driving. I will try the simple stop light switch fix and report back. Absolutely awesome that a thread started in 2003 is still coming to the rescue 8 years later. Gotta love this forum!

BAS light in Dashboard
Hi everybody,
i got a 1998 Mercedes E300TD and the BAS/ASR light keeps turning ON. In the center of the Dashboard, only the BAS is displayed. I have read on other forums that the brake light switch might be the problem or the voltage on the battery is low. That's not the case with my car. The BAS light only comes on when the outside temperature is below -1 degrees celsius and after a 5 minute drive. Even when it's extremely cold and i restart the car, the BAS light still comes on. I also noted that the engine's output performance is limited. When it's warm outside, the BAS never comes on. Please help me out guys.
