Wheel bearing noise?

I have a 2000 E320 4matic with 120k miles. I'm getting a significant humming noise from the drive train from 30mph and higher. Changes pitch with speed. I have switched the tires aroun and makes no difference so I think it must be drive train related. Sounds like a wheel bearing but does not change if I swerve side to side. sounds like it's coming from the front - but can't be sure. I jacked up the car and put stethescope on front hubs both sides - no unusual noise. Could it be a diff problem - carrier bearing etc.? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Right front - where the noise seems to come from was replaced about 2 months ago. I took it back to the shop and they blamed tires - new about 12k miles ago. Took it to tire shop - they said the tires are all good.

Doesn't your reply fall under the category of 'wasted posts'? I could probably write pages and pages on all the things that may or may not impact my problem - however, I try to stick to what I believe is relevent -and if that really bothers you - don't respond.

Cool Detailed to the point mechanical question : Noise from Wheel Area.

Have a 99 SL 500. Recent purchase. Noticed a whine noise from tires area. Most pronounced from front. When purchased had stiff cheap heavy tread tires. Replaced tires with all season Michlens. Helped reduce some noise. Mechanic drove car, did not pin point location of low pitched wine. Offered to look at wheel bearings. Most pronounced at 30,40 mph. Does very in loudness. Asked another mechanic. He chuckled, said thats a high performance all weather tire, will make noise. I have never had tire noise ,whine before. Have experienced noise with snow tires on a truck. Front differential? Check bearings, front and back? Have to go to MB dealer? Any suggestions or someone with similar issue?
Thank you all.

Re: the suggestion to inspect the front wheel bearings. On my E430 4matic, I believe the front wheel bearings are sealed ball bearings that require a press to remove and install. I don't think they're really made to be repacked.

I have a 2002 E430 4M and the front bearings are sealed, pressed to the hubs, and non-serviceable. The Front bearings on my E300 are tapered roller bearings and I was told to repack them about every 30K and I should never have a problem. Just my .02

Plutoe, you're fast to insult and chase away new members. We've been reading your mostly inaccurate, circular and annoying posts now for 3 years. Additionally you've chased away our best resources on this board through frustration.

Any new members that want to learn about their W210 (or any other MB model) should search and read the history of postings from Ohlord. He forgot more about the w210 than Plutoe ever knew.

The OP has a 4matic like me, and Blown confirmed my suspicion, they are sealed and not serviceable. Needing new bearings is possible, but needing to remove and repack them is not. Not trying to get involved in whatever war Plutoe is involved in, but in this case, that information is mistaken. 4matic bearings don't get repacked.

I too have that drone from the front, I think it's bearings, what's the likelyhood that it's something else? Differential? No change on turns, annoying as hell between 25-45mph.

It does sound like a wheel bearing to be honest mate. If there's nothing else noticeable it could be on its way out, if you need to source any bearings, this link had the cheapest prices i found: buy wheel bearings here. If its not the bearings, the humming noise could just mean your parts need lubricating.
