Replacing rear axle? E430

I have a boot that is toast and I need to replace it. I've read it's best to just replace the entire axle. Thoughts?

If so, where to buy?

Is there a DIY on this? I searched and cant find it.

Why not an easy DIY because of the subframe? Details please.....

Also, there are no axles on ebay now, and those at parts.com are wayyyyy expensive. So far all I can find reasonably are fronts, but my car is not a 4matic. Any other sources?

Thanks.

If you have a torn boot, why not just replace said boot and clean things up and re-grease in the process? Axles certainly don't normally need to replaced as long as you catch a torn boot before dirt gets in there and destroys the joint.

I had this done recently at an indy and they just sent the axles out to get rebuilt. Not really a DIY project unless you have a lift.

Why is this not a DIY? What is so difficult about it? Why is a lift needed? I put a 5 speed in my 66 mustang in my garage on jackstands, so I'm sure this is something I can handle...

I looked at the rear and the suspension and it looks like the axle should come out pretty easily without having to remove little if any of the suspension. ??

Thanks.

I'm sure it can be done, it's just above my skill level and I didn't have time to tackle it. Also I don't think these go out that often for people to do a complete DIY. If you do tackle this job maybe you can make a DIY. By the way I was quoted between $1000 to $3000 for the job.

Like a dummy, I forgot about this boot being torn and now I have a noise coming from the rear and pretty sure it's the axle. When I search online, I only see rear axle assemblies for the 4matic. Are the rear axle assemblies different between non-4matic and 4matic? My car is not a 4matic.

Thanks.

I can't get my rear axle back in my car. Do I need to remove some of the suspension?
