W210 Rear deck speakers

Can anyone comment on the rear deck speakers configuration with the Bose CD changer system?

The previous owner went aftermarket and then stripped out the sound system so I have no idea of what I'm replacing.

2 subs in the deck, 1? 8" or 10's? In a plastic box? Open into the trunk?

Any help would be appreciated.

There are two 6.5 2 ohm drivers sitting in proprietary baskets sitting in the rear deck under the speaker grills.

There are four equally sized holes in the rear deck, only the two outer ones are used to mount the factory speakers.

Just finished putting in soundstream free-air subs (8 in.) in place of the original bose subs. A little bit of fabrication was required to mount subs, but overall the results were well worth it.

cheers,

DFW, I'm in the process of redoing my whole system & I replaced my 6 1/2 inch Bose subs with regular coaxials for fill. From what I've heard from the local stereo shops, it will add more mids & highs & then you can take care of your subs in the trunk. I'll keep you posted on how my sounds when I'm done. Just a thought & good luck.

Putting coaxials on the rear deck was definitely one of the options for me as well.

Decided I didn't want to put the highs behind my head so kept the rear fill duty to the rear door speakers. Ended up putting 4 in. Focals in the rear doors for fill and keeping the front soundstage (with 3 way components) to give depth and front stage where I would be.

I just finished a complete redo. Lots of work to get it all done, but am happy with the results.

Hope this helps!

Guillermo,
I put MB Quart PCE 213's in the front, the 5 1/4's. Brilliant.
The tweeters are on -6. It's weighted a bit to the right side due to tinnitus in my left ear. Rock takes its toll over the years.

Then 4" Cerwin Vegas in the rear doors. The bass is okay but the tweeters have got to go. 5's will fit, wish I knew that in advance.

It is definitely missing bass. I'm not sure that coax in the deck will do it.

More likely 2 - 8's or 10's - in the deck if I can fit them.

Guillermo,

I went with Focal polyglass 165V3 for the front components. Unfortunately, was unable to fit the 4 inch midrange in the dash holes so ended up putting some kicker R3C (3.5 in.) drivers in there instead. I put the 4 inch mids from the Focal set in the rear doors.

If you want to put 5 1/4 in the rear doors, you will need to fabricate a mount. 4 in. drivers will work okay with the factory mount and provide the right amount of rear fill.

With the subs on the rear deck, I get plenty of bass for the type of music I listen to. (anything from norah jones to my wife's canto-pop) Plus, since these are free-air, I did not give up any trunk space. (important for golf clubs and baby gear!)

original headset??

Did you guys change out the speakers and just use the original Mecedes head unit? I was told you couldn't use normal 4 ohm speakers? Did you add an aftermarket amplifier?

Bose head with a 200w Rockford amp, MBQ and CerwinV 4 ohm speakers.

I've often heard that it can't be done. I'm not sure what the installer did though.

I've heard you can use the existing head unit with the standard audio system and add speakers and amps, but not with the Bose system.

The original head unit is crap. The Bose amp is a joke and nothing good either with the speakers.

For me, I ended up rewiring the whole system. (110 feet of speaker wire plus interconnects and power leads later!) New head unit, speakers, DSP/EQ and amps.

The head unit is awful

You're right the head unit is awful. There is no adequate stereo seperation and the tuner stinks. But, in the 2002 with fiberoptics to the steering wheel, if you replace the head unit you lose the steering wheel control. I'm happy to hear that adding an amp and speakers to the original head unit is a major upgrade to the system.
