Radio Update & Upgrade
Gents,
I’m going to replace my sock head unit with one that is usb/aux/Bluetooth compatible. However, I’d like to retain the functionality of the steering wheel controls. Volume and track advance. I prefer to purchase another Bose, alpine, or kenwood system.
Any suggestions?

Hi there!
I was in the same spot and opted for a modified Audio 10 CD player from car-radio.de
It can be optioned with AUX input as well as Bluetooth but no USB.
You'll retain steering wheel controls if you select the option on checkout.
Absolutely loving it.

I have been using the Audio 10 for my 1999 E320 for about 5 years. The sensitivity and selectivity
of the tuner doesn't seem to be that well designed. I will try focusing on amplifier and antenna
connections or I will simply replace the head unit with a single DIN DVD Pioneer which I have
on hand.

Thanks for the suggestions. After doing some research I’d like find a module like the Dension Gateway GS500. It is the only one I’ve been able to find with a D2B fiber optic converter that retains all radio functionality, including steering wheel controls etc. problem is there are only a few around on the internet anymore, and they are much more expensive than a new head unit. Ultimately I’d like to plug my iPhone 7 in and control streaming music apps via steering wheel while it charges. That’s the dream.

I have an opened box, though never installed, Kenwood KOS-A200. if it will pretty do the job for you,
and you've not located an available GS500, let me know. I bought it for installation but decided to go
with new head unit (I don't have steering wheel controls on my 1999).

Terrance and PortAxePlayer1, can you post an update as to where you are with your radio upgrade.
I'm looking at installing an Alpine that Alpine says it works with the Steering controls. I'd like to hear of another user who has actually done it.

What Alpine unit are you looking at exactly?

I'm looking at the Alpine CDE-172BT. Alpine says it works with the steering controls, it has bluetooth, and it as a microphone for handsfree telephone use.
I'm replacing an Alpine CDE-122 and will most likely sell it for whatever I'm offered.

I'd also contact Crutchfield and see if they could tell you for sure if a certain head unit can be made to work with the steering wheel controls.
