Newbie with E320

Hi guys, I have just purchased a relatively hi mileage '99 E320 (208k miles) and although it has a pretty good service history its clear that with the vibration I'm feeling under braking (and the receipts I have for the rear brake work) it appears new front rotor/pads might be in my very near future. I have changed out pads in the past on domestic vehicles, watched a few youtube vids on E320 install and read on this forum (just now) on step by step procedures to replace rotors n pads, so feel I should give it a go, especially as I'm being quoted $550-$660 by independents to do the job. My main question is what is the best place to order from online, or should I be going to a store like Napa Autoparts being as I'm up here in Oregon.

99 E320

Any advice appreciated

Daren

I ordered tires and pads from Tire Rack in the past and was satisfied. Last month I was fortunate enough
to have scored Akebono ceramic pads and MB rotors, all NIB, for $160 from a forum member who sold
his E320 and was getting rid of the parts. I plan on doing the installs myself as the forum here and
Benzworld and Peach Parts MB forums are full of DIY posts and photos (plus YouTube videos). I agree
that the degree of difficulty appears low. I'm just a home schooled wrencher and have no power tools.

I'm sure more folks will chime in with their favorite online vendor for OEM/aftermarket rotors and brake pads

If you need more 1999 info, email me. I've accumulated tons during my 10 yrs of ownership.

Beautiful ride. May I ask where did you find it? Craigslist? AutoTrader? Or a private sale?

Looks very clean. Any rust on it?

A gaggle of MB's
Back to Parts - check FCP Euro 1st and compare their offerings and prices to others - FCP has a GREAT warranty on their parts - a strong part to their marketing advantage :

That is a really clean car you snagged. Couldn't see you spending more than $175 on parts for the front brakes and this is a super easy DIY on your chassis. The last 99 I did had original rotors and they required a bit of finessing with a BFH to come off.

Nice condition for a 200k car, DarenB68. I'm getting ready to do a similar brake job on my car (older 96 E320). The brake warning light came on for me. So that usually means a little over 2mm left on the pad (front in my case). The front rotors are a little more etched with a lip at the edge. So am replacing them as well. I recently bought Akebono euro pads (front and back) and two front rotors from rockauto.com for a little over $190. But shop around and I also agree that fcpeuro.com, autohausaz.com and pelicanparts.com are also good places to buy parts. For the rotors, I went with Pagid. But Zimmerman, Brembo and ATE should also be good. For the pads maybe Pagid, Jurid or Textar for semi-metallic and Akebono for ceramic. Only missing items for me are synthetic grease (for the caliper pins) and gold anti-sieze (for the hub surface and pad ends/caliper bracket surface) which I'll just get locally. Enjoy the ride.

Thanks all, I thought I'd try the less speedy route first and just by the pads. I got them from Napa and they were OEM. $70. Installed them and low and behold the pulsing went away. The rotors looked to be a in good condition with no rutting or lip.1500 miles later, still stopping like a champ.

Sorry just saw this. I found it on CL in Portland. No rust but the interior could be better. I just changed the plugs myself and I can't quite believe how well it runs. I paid $1900 and its of course a 20ft car, get closer and you'll start to see the scratches and a few dings. There appear to be quite a few for sale in this area for under $3k. I don't think people realize how bullet proof these cars are, and how easy to work on. Cheers

^ Good deal from CL. I got mine (96 E320 w 96K miles) recently from CL for $1800. The second owner said that the previous one was an older lady that didn't really drive it much. Was also garage kept so only has a few areas starting to show some rust bubbles in the paint. I think most folks are scared to DIY for routine maintenance (like brakes). Also some may be scared about some issues depending on the model. I went through the eco wiring harness problem with an older 1993 300TE wagon I used to have. Technically, my 96 could have the same issue so I had some trepidations about getting another used MB. But in reality, all cars have known issues and perhaps one reason to buy older and/or with more miles is that those issues have probably already been fixed.

I highly recommend changing both the pads and the rotors. Not that expensive. top shelf parts. You don't need to buy I drive a 2000 E430(252K miles). I'm no mechanic but changed the brakes in about an hour once it was off the floor.
