2001 E430 4matic
New E430 owner, engine noise and few other questions....

What up everyone. I just purchased my 2001 Benz E430 4Matic. The car has 27,000 miles on it, black on black. Now, i am havin a few gripes about the car. Damn, car gets the worst gas mileage, and i thought my modified stang was bad. Second, anyone else have a loud whine at idle when you first start the car?? Another thing is, when i sit at idle, the car starts to idle real ruff and thing sounds like it knocks a little. Besides that, i love the hell outta the car. I'm thinkin of taking it in to have everything checked out by the dealer. I didn't buy the car from a benz dealer, how do i go about setting up an appointment with one as i still have my warranty. Oh forgot one other thing, the cup holder door doesn't stay shut at times as does the door above the ashtray door. Guess i need to have them check that out to. What's everyone else gettin mpg wise with an E430?? It was showing around 12mpg around town which is rediculous and around 17mpg on the turnpike here in NJ.

The bad mileage and rough idle is probably due to a faulty MAF. The cup holder door has two plastic pieces that attach to either side of the door. I'd bet one or both of the little plastic pieces have come off. Take the cup holder assembly out of the cup holder assembly area. You will be able to see the little arms. Reattach and the door should work properly. Or, since it is under warranty, take it to a dealership and let them do the work.

Wouldn't i see a check engine light though if my mass air sensor went bad?? I'm thinkin it could possibly be an o2 sensor as well, but then again, no check engine light.

hi,
re mpg i get a solid 20mpg in mixed use , say 2/3 time on the highway.
re 'whine' on start up, i dont know if this is same thing you describe, but my engine , on cold start, does rev slightly higher for 10 secs or so. then comes off rev slightly. i assume normal.
re cupholder cover , try cleaning the connection points. or when you shut it hold it for a second or two in position, it might take then.
i have 02 4matic w/27k also. solid car, you'll enjoy it once you get little things out of way.

My E430 (2 wheel drive) also gets around 20 mpg around town. Best I have gotten on highway is 25-26.

Cupholder is an engineering pain in the ***. Two trips to dealer to fix under warranty so far.

Startup "whine" is probably not a problem. Mine does that, just the nature of the mechanicals.

Be sure you have your warranty papers when you set up an appt. at the dealer. They will run your VIN to tell what warranty you have.

Good Luck.

I just did a good test of my total mileage. I did almost all parkway or highway miles and got 311 miles to the tank, when i filled up, it took 18.9 gallons. So let's see, figure the tank is i guess 20 gallons, maybe 19 which averages to about 16mpg total which is very ****ty in my eyes. Damnit!! Guess i gotta live with it though. You think i should take it in anyway and have it checked out, the mass air and such?

Cupholder

The door must be a common problem, they had 5 in stock at the dealer. It takes about 45 min to replace. The holder assembly is a easy pull out! I hear the whine from other Mercedes where I live in the garage when they start. It could be the air pump but I dont know. You can set up an appointment, the VIN is gospel, you also might notify MB there should be a card in the owners manual in case there are any recalls. The dealer should check to see if there are any "open campaigns" (recalls)

My Mustang gets about 15MPG when I get on it...

I did a search on these cars, and mainly because of the gas milage that the V8s got, I ended up getting a V6 instead.

I have the exact same car, so welcome! For the most part I average about 26 miles per gallon on the hwy and 19-21 in the city, so if yours is that low it's possible you need to change your MAF and o2 sensors (mine we're replaced 22,000 miles ago). One of the unique traits of this car, however, is that it estimates your mileage for the entire ride, not just the highway. That time you spend idling in traffic is included, so what you are seeing for mileage may be more accurate than what your used to on the stang.
If you want to get a real highway mileage number, get onto the highway, pull over and turn the car off for 30 seconds. When you restart the car your trip will be starting at higway miles. I drove from Philly to Southwestern VA once for 6 hours doing 80 the whole time and I still averaged 27 miles per gallon.
Have fun with your car, it's one of my favorites

There's definitely something wrong with your car. Your mileage should be around 24-26 highway. I'd have a mechanic look it over carefully and give you his opinions. It may cost you an hour labor but will be well worth it. Best to find a non-dealer mechanic that specializes in Mercedes.

Or you can just hold the reset button on your instrument cluster when the read-out is on the trip setting. No need to pull over.

Did you know, in the past, Mercedes refused to put in cupholders until they lost clients to Japanese cars just because Lexus had cupholders.

Today, Alfa Romeos I hear often come without cupholderes.

Yes, and then MB put in a lousy flimsy plastic arm that dumps your drink onto the sensitive shifter console if you brake a bit hard, which then shorts out to the tune of $1500 in repairs. They should have left them out.

Funniest cupholder is in the glove box door on the W210. Completely useless unless the car is stationary, else your cup falls off onto the floor.
