Anyone know where the VSS wire is?

I have a 2000 E Class. Everyone keeps saying there is green/black wire in position one of the radio harness. But I don't have one. In block A of the radio harness I only have a gray, red/white, yellow/balck, blue/white and brown wire. Is the gray wire the VSS wire?

What do you need it for?

I need it for an Alpine navigation system. The system needs to know how fast the car is going in case it loses track of the satellites.

Thanks for the diagram. I actually already have it and suspect that it is for the 1996-1999 W210 or maybe a different chassis altogether. I think they slightly changed it for the 2000-2002 W210. The A block which they show having 7 wires--my 2000 E320 only has 5 wires. I suspect the fiber optic system can send some of those signals that used to need a designated analog wire as my A block does not have an illumination signal at all.

My 2000 W210 E320 has:
1 empty
2 gray wire--have no idea what it does
3 black/yellow wire--have no idea what it does
4 red/white--constant 12V just like your diagram
5 blue/white--remote turn on lead just like your diagram
6 empy
7 empy
8 brown--ground wire just like your diagram

I drove around today with a volt meter attached to the gray wire and then to the black/yellow wire. No fluctuation in the voltage so I assume I can rule out either of those wires as being the VSS. So how did the stock radio get it's VSS signal? I suspect through the fiber optic connection. So that means I need to hunt elsewhere for the VSS signal wire which other people on this forum have said it is a black/green wire but no one has really given me a specific place where I can find it. Alpine suggest to put the car up on jack stands and tapping into the transmission wire harness but I don't really think that would be good idea. Somewhere in the car the fiber optic network must be getting a VSS signal. I just need to find that and tap into it also.

Thanks for your replies.

I believe the fiber optic network does more than just the CD changer. It also carries phone signals, GPS info, connects the steering wheel functions, etc.

some slow@$$diesels
the grey wire goes straight into the diagnostic connector pin 33...the yellow/black wire will mute the radio as soon as you connect it to ground (telephone mute)...the green/black wire is no longer to be found in pin pos 1 since the 2000 modelupdate...you will have to get it out of the rightside cable gutter - near the A-pillar...green/black.

...ow...and the original headunit got it's VSS signal through CANBUS (brown and brown/red wire in C connector)...but that is of no good for any aftermarket HU.

greetingz,
