Advice on how to drop transmission.

2001 E320 4matic Wagon with a shot rear seal. I'm on a dirt driveway and I know this job is all labor. If I can replace both the front and rear suspension, I should be able to handle this job I figure and there must be a technique to safely, successfully do this. Is there anyone out there with particular tips/advice to help me do this job? I'm operating under the idea of jack stands for the front end but no idea what to do for removing the transmission and putting it back with the car on that angle.

Thanks for the help.

I've done the job on W202 and W210 (M112/M113). Do not try this on a dirt driveway if you value your life. The entire are must be up on jack stands, be rock solid stable and with at least 20" of clearance You have to remove the entire exhaust system and the driveshaft. I use a small transmission jack I bought from Harbor Freight. Even with 20" of clearance it is a takes a lot of fussing to roll the unit out from under the car. And you will need every bit of that clearance to gain access to various fasteners. If you do figure out how to lift and support the car properly, the WIS calls for the end cover that supports the RMS must be removed and the seal removed on the bench. Prying it out in place can damage or crack the end plate. Placement of the seal in the end cover must be precise and tricky even with the tool specified in the WIS. See attachments.

Hey thanks for that and there's no way for me to get the entire car up on stands, I tried that last year and it failed miserably, just too much weight pivoting on points that give with this dirt driveway. Well that's too bad, the job seems pretty darned simple compared to the work I've had to do on this beast but I'll bring into my local Firestone, gave me a quote for 1300, ugh....20 dollar part job.

Yeah, I suppose it's still a win if you look at it the right way: With me doing all the maintenance and repairs on the beast, I've saved us quantities of thousands, so I have to give a sacrifice back and give the rear seal job to the mechanic gods. Can't fix them all.
