Please help me make a decision.....

Hello All

Ok my Uncle just got a new car and he is offering to sell me his 96 E320 for $6,500. It has 158K on it and has been well maintained by specialty shops. Also the first 80K on the car were highway miles mostly and put on the car in about one year.

Now what I am wondering is is it worth doing? I fell that the engine can give me at least another 100K if I keep it up. He will replace the starter and shocks and the car will be ready to go. Your opiinions will really help me over the fense in one direction or the other. Thanks.

Oh he just got the tranny redone.

Really depends on what you want.

Can you deal with a car that drives and handles well with prestige but may have some expensive up keep costs?

The mileage is not a big concern as these cars will go along way but there is a chance that things will get broken in the future.
Repairs and maintenance costs for these cars are expensive so you need factor that into your decision.
Alot of us deal with it because it is more enjoyable to keep driving these cars than to just drive a good dependable car like Honda or Toyota.

I have a 96 E320 with 155,xxx miles on it and it has for the most part been trouble free but I know that at any moment there could be a costly repair coming up. My car is very solid and I expect to drive it another 100,000 miles or more.

Good luck with your decision.

Thank you for answering I thought people would just keep reading the post and passing it by. Anyway I have owned many Euro cars and have come accustom to the repair cost so I may just go for it. Again thanks for posting a reply.

Sounds like a good deal and since the tranny is new I think it is a great deal. My new tranny just cost me $4500. If you spend a total of 10k (including the car) you can have a really nice car. Wheels, tint, detail and lowering will make your car look much newer. If your happy with power of a 6cyl I say go for it.
Good luck
Mario

Hi Why Not,

Is the mileage on your car correct?
I just did the conversion to miles and its 326,219 miles.
If that is, that's amazing.
How were you able to get so many miles on your car?
Any major problems to look out for?

According to his sig, the Europimp has close to 600K Kms on his C (N.B. granted it is a few years older).....I guess the Europeans tend to travel across the continent a bit more. My 98 has less than 50K kms and that's because I don't have a lot of road to cruise on out here .

Personally, I don't think you'd go wrong by making that purchase. Just be sure you really are prepared for the occassional expensive repair. Good luck.

Yes that is a lot..
The car was a taxi.. there has not been any big problems..
The only thing is rust.. but i live in a country where we use salt a lot..
It still runs like a dream..same engine and tranny.. (even steve think it rocks)
The inside was i LITLE worn.. but i had all replaced..
It very economical.. i did 850km without stopping on my way to NL last time -could have continued 150 km. I love the car..

My biggest problem is that my vife loves it to.. so im often stuck with the vw polo

Yeah I think it's a great deal as well. I sold my '97 E420 with just over 140k miles on it and it was like a new car. With that many miles you are always concerned with the tranny but it has been dealt with so no probs. there. Make sure the rack and pinion are in good shape and that there are no major oil leaks anywhere that need to be dealt with. Also, your front end suspension bushings if they haven't been replaced, should be worn and possibly cracked by now so if you end up doing any suspension upgrades, make sure to have them replaced.

Whatever you decide to do please make sure to post some pics, especially if and once you starting modding it. Good luck!
