A/C Filter Replacement

'01E430: My manual says at "A" service the A/C filter should be replaced. My Mb service people say to do it at "B" service. What's been your experience? It probably doesn't really matter but I'd like to know. Thanks.

Post Filter replacement

The filter in Question is replaced at the B Service!
Its a Pain to replace since you must remove the glove box to access the filter housing..But the service is covered under MB

Re: A/C Filter replacement

My dealer (Colorado) did replace the filter on my "01 E320 during the "A" service. However, I had to push it, show him a copy of (the Dealer's) website whic reviewed the "A" service including the change.

For the record, I picked up my car in Germany, toured the factory, etc, and the MB rep who spent 2 hours with me explaing how everything worked said "you might as well leave the filter in the on position, as they will change it out each time". What I have learned is that you have to be specific as to what you expect the dealer to do and be firm.

Are you guys talking about the pollen filter or the charcoal filter.
THe pollen filter is cheap and easy to replace once you have done it (about $25). The charcoal filter is the one that can be turned on, it is much more expensive ($90) and should last about 80000 miles (regardless of what MB says). Some only replace the charcoal filter once it stops working, which also makes sense.

My car is a little older so I don't have the free service.

I was presuming we were talking about the charcoal filter which is paired, and behind the glove box. This filter by what is printed in the manual and what is on the standardized internet sites of most MB dealerships, reviews changing them every service, "A" and "B".

The manual calls it the dust filter (under heating and ventilation). This is the pollen filter. The charcoal filter is for emmissions control. I'll insist that it be replaced when I next visit the dealer. They're nice people, but they should've done it. Which web sites are you folks referring to? - the ones that show A and B service details? Thanks.

Most MB dealerships seem to have changed the format they have used in the web sites about 10 months ago, to one which (I would guess) has been provided by MB USA. On the service page, they refer to what is done for the "A" service and so on, and it lists the dust filter. I had to print it, show it to the service writer, who agreed to change the filters and was "going to talk to MB USA" about what he saw as a discrepency between how they have always done it (not replace filters to the "B" service), and this newer list.

Here's a link to a page in my state (my local dealer's page seems to be on the fritz). You'll see the second item under "A" service.
