replacment battery

Any suggestions, other then the dealer, to get a replacement battery for my 98 300TD? Tried Sears and they don't carry one with the cranking power req. Even went to Wally World.

Thanks

I think I saw the proper battery (Group 49) at Pep Boys once,
but it wasn't cheap. Do you have that chain in your area?

I hate to break this, but the only place to get a battery is through your local MB dealer, since the battery is very large and you have to remember that it's placed under the rear seat due to the fact how the design of the battery. I know they aren't cheap but they are darn good battery. What's werid is that those battery are made in Spain.

I just replaced the battery in my car as well. You should be able to get one from AutoZone for $64.99. Works like a charm.

Road-Aid (MB roadside assistance) will come out and replace your battery, $115 no labor. If you take it in they will charge you the same price plus labor.

Peter: Tell me more about the roadside assistance program. The dealer wants $125. and I don't know if that is installed.

Is your vehicle a diesel? Need at least 850 cranking power for my 98 E300TD.

Doesn't matter where they are made! There are at least two places to purchase replacement
batteries for the W-210s (all models BTW) besides the dealer, and they're a lot less expensive.

I mentioned this above, but again, the proper battery is known as a Group 49.
It's measurements are 14 5/16 X 6 1/2 X 6 13/16 inches.
You're correct about one thing, it is the largest battery I've seen in a passenger car.
They're available at the local Pep Boys in Temecula California, and Michakaveli says Interstate makes one.
He should know, as he has a diesel, and so does his dad.

Plenty of locations stock or can order Interstate Batteries.

Wink That Makes Four.

So far, at least four different brand names.

$65 sure beats that MBZ replacement.

Not that hard to replace yourself BTW.
It is a heavy mother to be sure!

Yes, it's a size 49 battery, it's the only battery of that size that they have and the only one that will fit a Mercedes w210. I've got 96k mi on my E and yes, the battery fit perfectly without any forcing. There is a small retaining bolt holding a piece of metal up against the battery to keep it from sliding around under the back seat, this will have to be removed before you can take the battery out.

As Green mentioned above, it's a heavy mother and might take a bit of elbow grease to lift it out from under the back seat.

Lol yeah, I thought the point was to avoid paying $125 at the dealer! :p

I guess this way they come to you and you don't have to take your car to the dealer.

Also, be aware that you might have to have your computer reset after replacing the battery to clear any error codes that pop up. And have your radio key card handy because you'll have to enter that into the radio once the battery is replaced as well. I found out that the key card that came with my car was invalid because the radio had been replaced before I bought the car!

Question As a Substitute

I'm waiting for mine, which I think is the original, to go bad and see if I can make an Optima fit.

Yes I know that the Optima does not have the cold cranking capicity of 825
amps, but do I need that much here in relatively warm Southern California?
The Optima 75/35 does have 720 CC amps and 910 cranking amps.

I have replace the battery in my W 210 1999 modell 2 weeks ago.
The new battery was a BANNER, 13inch long and 100 Ah . The orginal old one was smaller and 74 Ah.
I connect a ordinary batteri charger to the + and - terminals in the engine rum, so the car have power on the system whole time. No promlem with radio ,doors or error code after the now batttery was connected.

But if the old battery was already dead !!!, the charger will not reset your codes for radio ...etc. Once the battery is dead, u need to imput your codes again. I am not sure how u had power on the system the whole time since the battery was dead to begin with and that is why u had to replace !!!
Maybe your MB was outsorced by IBM to be built in India too !!!

Is this Optima battery a Gel battery?
I heard that Gel batteries last much longer and they are smaller in size.
Anyone know?

Battery was replaced by roadside assistance. I guess I didn't make myself clear but trying to find a battery for the 300TD is not easy. Did find an Interstate, same battery that MB sells, for the same $$$$ as MB. Difference was MB came and installed it in my garage w/o charge.

The reason I replaced the battery, other then it was 7 years old, was the faults, ck engine-ck electronics, lights and I wanted to be sure it wasn't the battery. Well it wasn't the battery but that had to be replaced especially living in the harsh NWNJ winter.

When the vehicle was at the dealer for the rust repair, another report, I had all the filter replaced. Runs great but now have to find out why the fault lights. Any suggestions?

Thanks
