Today I got in my car and inserted the key and a beeping sound, kind of like an alarm went off in the trunk. I opened the trunk and it was coming from the area where the nav DVD player is installed. It went off after about 1 minute. I have heard this beep once or twice before but it had only beeped once so i couldnt pinpoint it. Has anyone else had this happen? I have no idea what it was, but it sounded like some type of warning sound.

I have definately heard this sound and have never been able to trace where it is coming from. Which engine and model year do you have?

Do both of you have the Navigation DVD in the trunk? I have never heard it, but it might be an error from the drive? Who knows?

I have an 05 E500. The sound is coming from behind the panel where the Nav DVD player is located. It clearly sounds like a warning sound, but there is no other indication of any problem from the dash or the Comand screen.

I have heard the same beep, but as shoes stated it is sporatic and so quick I haven't been able to trace where it is coming from. I have heard the beep 3 times since I took delivery of the car, I'll ask next time I take it in for service, but it is hard to replicate for the service advisor as I have no idea why or when it will happen. The only thing I have noticed is it happens just as I am turning the car on.

I have also heard this beep two or three times in the 5 months I've owned the car. It a very short, somewhat high-pitched beep which occurs only once. Most recently it happened when I had a passenger in the car and we both sort of jumped and instinctively looked behind us (toward the back seat) because that's were the sound was coming from. Each time I've immediately checked the dash board expecting to see some warning message lit up, but nothing.

It would be nice if someone at Mercedes were reading this so they could ask their techs to investigate. As is, I cannot take my car to the dealer and ask them to drive it for a month so they can hear the one or two times this happens. Everytime this sound goes off, you sort of stop and wait for something more to happen, but nothing does. The first time I heard this noise was when I was praising my car for being so trouble free. Not a big deal, but it would be nice to know what the issue is.

Me too. It's happended 2-3 times in the past 6 months. Definitely coming from the rear storage compartment. Notice I've got the 05 wagon with DVD nav. Hasn't bothered anything, that I know of, so I've disregarded it. In any case, it shouldn't happen. Will follow the thread to learn what avenues may be possible.

Writing from a bottomless well of ignorance, since I don't have navigation:
1. Does everyone reporting the "beep" have navigation installed? That appears to be so. In my case, no nav and no "beep."
2. If everyone hearing the "beep" has navigation, has anyone tried removing the DVD from the unit to see if it makes the same "beep"? If the nav unit complains with a "beep" when the disk is missing, it seems at least possible that it might also complain if it momentarily has trouble reading the disk. Is the "beep" entirely random, or is it related to use of the nav system?
"DVD rot" is a real and bothersome phenomenon. If you've lately tried to play a movie DVD you purchased at the dawn of the DVD era (mid-to-late 90s), you probably discovered that it plays poorly or not at all, and cleaning doesn't help. Whether a nav DVD that's only a year or so old would be deteriorating, I don't know, but the trunk of a car probably isn't the best environment for a DVD or DVD player.

After investigating in more detail, I realized that the sound was coming from the fuse box, which is located just in front of the Nav DVD.

I've also heard this noise a few times since ownership....I also agree it's coming from the area of the nav system.... No clue what causes it...

I retrofitted a nav a week ago and have not heard the beep. But it's only been a week since I had it.
I don't recall seeing a speaker of some sort by the fusebox when I had the trunk panel out. The AGW (MOST ring master) is right behind the fusebox so that could be a possibility as well.

I just added a 2005 E55 wagon to my garage in addition to my 2005 E320 CDI. I heard the same noise from the wagon the other day. I also had the trunk open on the diesel and I heard three beeps. I just contacted my service advisor to see if there is any kind of service bulletin from Mercedes. I wonder if it is air bleeding from something? Why would it have anything to do with Nav? I never heard this sound on any other Mercedes with Nav.

An E55 wagon? So new that even the MBUSA web site hasn't heard of it yet.
Anyway, about the beep/alarm sound .... could it be something that sounds like, oh, I don't know, a ... BAGPIPE?

I wonder what that noise is. I have the Nav. system and I never get that noise. I wonder how many of the people who hear this also have the air seats?

Glojo has been hiding in recent days. Maybe he'll come back for this one, he is the past master on this topic.Originally Posted by SAguirre

On a cultural note. Hint: Never juggle your haggis, they should always be tossed (usually straight in the bin!!!)

Both my cars that are making this noise have the inflatable bladder seats. However, I have an SL600 with these seats and it has never made the noise.
Newbie
I have complained about the noise to my dealer and they've inspected the car 3 times. They have not been able to duplicate it.
Once, when the noise happened, I ran out, popped the trunk and heard it come from the NAV DVD unit.
I'm glad someone finally brought this up as a discussion topic and hopfully we'll figure out what the heck is causing it.

My car made the same sound when I first got it. The dealer diagnosed the problem as a "pinched" air line to the dynamic seats. They replaced (or re-routed) the lines, and I have not had a repeat in 4 months.
