How to adjust memory seats?

Hey guys, I recently acquired an '03 E320 and it did not come with the manual. I was wondering how to do the memory seats. Also, how many keys come with your "E" when you buy it because this dealer only had one key. Do you think I should make them get me another? Thanks! and looking forward to being a frequent visitor to this awesome forum. Alex

You can download a manual from the MB website: www.mbusa.com, or http://www.mercedes-benz.com/mbcom/i...te/en/com.html
You may have to register as a MB owner.

Get the seat the way you want it. Press M. Press a number. From then on, just pressing the number will return the seat to that position.

You should have two keys and associated manual(s). Was this a MB dealer? Yes or no the dealership should acquire both for you from MBUSA at their cost!

More specifically, press and HOLD the number until the seat stops moving.
The seat stops moving immediately if you release the button.

Took my wife awhile to figure that part out...

Why is that? Why should you have to hold the button?
Other cars I have owned restoredthe memory settings without holding down the button.
I liked that much better.

I would guess they might consider it a "safety" feature -- so the seat doesn't crush you against the steering wheel, for example. I also found it a bit annoying, but I knew about it in advance from when I had driven a friend's Benz recently.

In my wife's 540i, you can open the door and press one of the numbers, let go, and the seat moves to the correct position for that number, making it easy to get in the car because the seat is in the right place for you. Once you get in and put the key in the ignition, you have to hold the button until the seat reaches the correct position. In both my Benzs, opening the door and pressing one of the numbers does precisely nothing. The only way to get in the car after a shorter driver has used the car is to press the button on the door that moves the seat back, then get in, put your key in the ignition, and press and hold the right number.

The BMW is also slightly easier to program in that, after you press the M key, a light goes on indicating that, when you press a number you will change the programming. The light goes off when you press the number, indicating successful programming.

Yep, my other car (Jag) works the same way as the BMW. It even has a little chime that signals the successful programming is completed. To adjust from another driver, you press the number. It adjusts the mirrors, seat, steering without holding down the button continuously.

For Benz, as suggested, it must be an over-engineered safety feature.

I would ask the dealer to provide a second key. These keys are not cheap. I have heard prices from $150-250 per key. One option is to get a used key from eBay and have it reprogrammed. I have not heard what that price is. Bottom line is that the key is unique and can not be provided by just anyone.

I just got a replacement from an "insider" for $114.
He indicated the regular retail price would have been $130.
