Birds Eye Display

This looks like it came from a W211 COMAND. anybody know how the display can be switched between these modes?

I don't have an answer for your question, but is the W211 NAV display actually monochromatic - blue and white? I've never seen one in operation.

No it's full color. Green for parks, blue for lakes, etc.

Steve BenzNL said this is available only on the Siemen's nav in other MB, not the Bekker ones in our W211.

But the display look identical though.

It's Montvale, New Jersey, of course - MBUSA's home.

Just curious, for those who have actually tried it...is there any advantage of having 'birds eye' view over the standard view?? It looks cooler but that's about all I can think of

Look at the way the streets are laid out relative to the screen space. Roads much farther away take up less space on-screen, and roads in your immediately vicinity are able to take up more space (be shown at a larger size) which I would think makes it easier to grasp at a glance.

Just a wild guess.

Does the wedge-in-circle indicator symbol tell you the direction you are actually heading, or what direction you should be heading/turning to reach your intended destination? If the former, the overhead view is unintuitive because it points to the right; most people would assume that the top of the screen is their current direction of travel, whether in a perspective or overhead view.

In any event, the indicated location is an unmapped parking lot off (naturally) Mercedes Drive in Montvale, NJ.

The wedged circle represents your car, the wedge points in the same direction the car is heading. On the Navigation menu you have two settings, one is for North always UP and the other is to have your direction of travel be UP.

I personally have it set so that my direction of travel is always UP. When I got the software update that lets my single slot play MP3s, I also got a new menu setting for 2 d or 3 d. The 3 d setting is low lighted and can not be selected. I suspect that when new navigation DVDs come out this will be enabled. However, I am totally used to seeing maps on flat paper. I think that this birdseye view is neat, but rather a just-for-show option.

In the past 8 months, I have really gotten used to the system and I have found it very useful to have when I am looking for new addresses. I buy a lot of foreclosures and I tend to drive by the listings on the weekends to see if they are something even remotely appealing. Since I have this system, I have really been able to find the properties as if I always knew where they were! Actual street addresses would be nice to have, but again, I think that will come in the next update/DVD, I hope.

Steve
