I drain from the bottom by removing the drain plug from the oil pan. You have to remove the covers underneath the car to access it.

I drain from the dipstick hole with the car on a sloping driveway; its quick and neat. I changed the oil between 3000 & 4000 miles

I have tried the suction method with an oil extractor and have found it leaves about an 1/4 quart of the dirty oil still in the sump. How do I know you ask? After I did the extraction with the pump, I then performed the draining method. I actually alternate methods depending on how much time I have. I change the oil every 6500 miles.

On another note I was at the dealer today for a bluetooth adapter and I spoke to the shop service manager about the differential in the oil level reading on the service menu. He told me that I was correct in that even though the stated capacity for the diesel is 6.87 quarts that you typically have to put in 7.5 quarts for it to read the 6.8 quarts level in the service menu. CE750, this explains why you were charged for the extra oil.

I am able to drain all 9 quarts through suction since I was able fill the old oil completely into 9 quart containers; I have lots of patience. Now if there was more than 9 quarts in there, I would not know if there is was a 1/4 quart left in there. In any case, my own oil change is only alternate oil changes. Regular oil changes at scheduled intervals have been at the dealer and unscheduled (half way) oil change I did and will continue to do myself using the suction method. I am not saving anything, in fact paying extra for the intermediate oil change I am doing myself.

thanks
According to my car's sensor and my dealer, 9.3 quarts is spot on.

Stop The Presses!

Whoa!

We're talking about different motors in the same thread as if they were the same engine.

2005-06 had the I6 3.2 liter engines.

07 and Bluetec and are a 3.0 V6 engine.

I know 9.x quarts is OVERFILL on an '05 or '06 I6 design and can damage the engine. (although if working properly the instrument cluster will go red and warn you resulting in merely the pain in the *** of draining).

Well, all we have determined from this thread is that no one really knows how much oil is supposed to go into the diesels either I-6 or V-6. The dealers all seem to state different levels to meet the standard oil level sensor requirements and the "secret service menu indicator" requires aprox. 7.5 quarts to read 6.8 in the instrument cluster.

Hello,

I'm curious to know at what point the add 1 quart message comes up. When I check the level using the display it indicates 6.0 quarts.

My '06 E320 CDI manual indicates that 8.0 quarts is the capacity.

Thanks, Marc

Oil Levels reading versus Quarts in the Oil Pan!

Today, for the first time, I sucked the oil out of my oil pan in my 2006 Mercedes E320 CDI with the In-line 6 cylinder. Now, I may not have gotten the last half an ounce or 1/4 of a cup of oil, but I'm happy and I'm German with 40 years of experience with instruments in power plants. I even went through the evacuation process two times and was right at the bottom of my oil pan and getting no more oil, just a lot of slurping!

So, I installed the filter and added 8 Quarts of oil to the engine and I'm and happy camper! I was always worried about over filling the engine. I wanted to establish some "base line data" so I parked the car on the level and allowed it to set for an hour before using the "3-click method" and reading the level on my dash. The answer is, for my car only, 8.0 quarts with a filter gives me a reading of 6.7 Quarts. It's good base line data and something for me to remember in the future.

Now, when I read 6.7 quarts, I'll know my engine is full and that's all I need to know.

I have an 06 CDI with an I6 engine. Manual says 8qts I believe. anyway last change I put 8 qts in and my level indicated 5.9 qts even after it sat for a while. I don't think that level sensor is very accurate. Which is terrible because of course you get no dipstick...

How do you read the engine oil level in qts? My dash just says "engine oil ok" after measuring.

Try this. It is really neat when you have this display showing while driving. The oil level will drop down to 4 quarts at times.
If you purchased a dip stick, see the second attachmentd for information.

Oil Level is Repeatable

The good thing about the 6.7 Quarts that I am reading is that the number is
"repeatable". I don't really care what the number really is, - it would be nice if if was 8.0, but it doesn't really matter to me. Where I park my car, an indication of 6.7 Quarts means that I have 8.0 Quarts in my crankcase! That also explains why I was able to extract more than 8 Quarts of oil from my car when I had a reading somewhere around 7.2 Quarts. It would be nice if the number was closer to 8.0, but it only a number.

05 e320 cdi vs 06 e320 cdi oil capacity

I have owned an 06 e320 cdi and the 05 cdi as well. They have different oil capacity. The 06 holds more oil. I believe it is 8 quarts as opposed to the 6.87 for the 05. The 05 may even have different capacities based on the month of manufacturing. My 06 took almost 8 quarts, it had 425k when it was totaled. We replaced it with an 05 e320 cdi and it takes 6.87 quarts .Just giving my two cents worth.
