SBC Replacement
Read on JESMB that the current SBC brakes on the W211's will be replaced next spring along with the face lift. It will be a conventional brake system with SBC similar functions. They also said that the SL will keep the present system until 2012 when the next model comes out.

Course my source was rumor as well, but I heard that was all part of the major change to the W212 in 2009.
2007 I hear is just 6.3 with minor body changes and improved CLS handling advances to freshen up.

"In the spring it gives then a Facelift for the e-class (some change outside and inside as well as new V8 engine M273 and E 63 AMG). Besides the SBC brake is replaced by a conventional brake with SBC similar functions."
I think the M273 is the new 4-valve V8. Get out your checkbook guys

What a sad day, I wonder if this is more cost cutting. I say this simply because the flagship Mercedes-Benz has this brilliant system. (SLR)
Will the new vehicles will finally offer the US all the European SBC options?
Have a nice day,
John
A nice warm morning in Torquay

As for the current 5 liter being obsolete, you can look at it as a muture, reliable engine that has lots of torque. For Americans, that's what matters most.

BMW seem to be able to include much of the features of the SBC system in their new 3er's and it's driven by a regular hydraulic master cylinder.

This totally smacks of cost cutting.. as the three MB master techs I spoke to at my loacl dealer all said they have had 0 problems with the SBC from a maint standpoint in their 3 years servicing E class, so it clearly isn't a problematic system, but rather a more expensive one. I read in a previous post a lot of other features have ben removed from the '06 CDI over the '05.. this is a classic cost cutting measure.. you adjust the price up a bit, and you take out a few items.. such as the rear leather inserts on the '05's.. very disappointing.

Having said goodbye to my E320 - the thing I miss the least was the feel of those SBC brakes.
I've spoken w/M-B techs who cringe at the mere mention of SBC.

My service rep who has been with MB for years said that they get many complaints about the SBC ( which is reflected on the forums). I personally find SBC to be the worst part of the W211 and a significant reason why I'm happy to get rid of it. It stomps on my driving buzz. Anyhow, I'm glad they are getting rid of it.I'm looking at the new S class and if it had SBC I wouldn't touch it.
EDIT: BTW.. JPrescott.. are you aware that you XC 90 has a form of SBC?

As for the S class, you can bank on it.. they'll have SBC2 and it will be even better.. But that's just speculation.

You really don't realize how much MB puts into R&D for safety until you parse one of these cars into it's individual safe components.
It's just sad that they develop it, and the Japanese refine it and take credit for it in the form of "higher quality" cars.
I'm no expect on bikes, but I guess the reverse can be said of the Motorcycle industry where Yamaha and Kawasaki are always inovating and do more to improve cafe bikes than anyone, yet people still rant about Ducati and Triumph.

The crazy thing that I have never understood, is that the US 211 has a very cut down, basic version of SBC, yet like you have correctly stated there has been complaints about SBC, but I believe only from US members???
You have complained about cup holders and got different cup holders ( but still there are complaints ) Why not let US vehicles have the old drum brakes and let the rest of the World keep this excellent system?
Just remembered.
There have been European complaints about rear disc pads wearing out before the fronts, but I cannot recall any complaints about the operation of the system.
Regards,
John

So while I hate the fact that MB is skimping on some of the "gee wiz" features by making them optional, the rest of the car, and the engineering of the company (SBC included) is great! Give me more!
This reminds me of when avionics first went computerized (glass ****pit) and all the pilots said.. oh no! What if it goes out? or why make it so complicated?? etc... today, even a $500,000 Cessna comes with "Glass" ****pit.
We move forward, not back.
