E320 -211 battery malfunction

On ignition position 2 get red battery symbol with unexplanatory msg "visit workshop." Suspect this indicates low battery charge. Alternator serpentine belt is OK and all consumer functions are normal. Trickle charged trunk battery at 2 amps. Malfunction msg remains. Manual does not refer to this msg specifically but obliquely suggests the battery has been externally charged. In any event it does not instruct how to clear it (ie, if its in red it must be serious?). Workshop can not/will not advise as to how to clear the error msg without a shop visit ($$$$$)!!!!
This msg has appeared once before after trickle charging following a month parked. After numerous restart cycles, msg finally disappeared. Surely one does not need to "visit workshop" after every incidence of trickle charging!
Any advice? Thanx.

This may help, look into the service campaigns listed here.

Konigstiger: Thanx for suggestion - will verify VIN and confront service advisor accordingly. PS: I recently responded to SBC recall and was required to leave car for 2 days to effect the "up to 5 hr" service. No mention was made of the alternator/regulator advisory at that time, other than that they would carry out whatever other recall service was necessary for my vehicle. Gut Fahrt!

They want to keep your car because they don't stock the parts. It doesn't take 5 hours to change the clip and bracket. If they had to change the pump it could take that long (MBUSA says 4.0 hours in their recall letter).

MBUSA has had months to set up this recall. You would think they'd insure that the dealers had the parts before they sent the letter out.
