Keeping an E after warranty?

Hey guys, how many of you plan to keep your E after the warranty is up? Would it be a wise idea to have one that has no warranty, were looking at one that has a little over a year left and would probably buy an extended warranty..but what do you think? Is it wise to keep it out of warranty? It's certainly not an S-Class which I would never let my parents own after the warranty.

There are CDI's driving around in Germany with 300,000 miles on them... heck 50K is the break-in on a CDI.

Its the electronics/electrical I worry about....

Have heard horror stories about $2k MB trans modules failing due to fluid contamination, esp light on, bas light, airbag light, egr failures (CDI), harmonic balance failures (W210 E320 gas), etc etc etc.

Not worried about the mechanical stuff, like CE750 said, its pretty much bulletproof.

If anything, make sure your warranty covers all the accessory stuff, the high failure rate stuff that will nickel and dime you $500 - $2500 a pop again and again and again.

I will not even consider keeping my E500 after warranty expires.

that's the fact... if by 49K you're not getting any issues, you're not likely going to all of a sudden. My intent is to keep it 100,000K or so.. I drive 18K/yr so that would be just about 6 years. By then I'll easily be able to get $25K for it, and that's a fair deal for me.

I never keep a car past warranty. Shopping for the next one is almost more fun than owning the current one.

No major issues so far. Wish it had more power, though. Maybe the 500 would have been a better choice.

So, if it holds up thru the 1st 40k, will probably get an aftermarket warranty before the factory expires and keep it until around 80k-90k then sell.
Pretty much what I've done with other cars in the past.

It would be expensive and possibly frustrating if you keep the car after the warranty. That's why I bought the extended warranty and plan to sell it like a year of less before the warrany expires.

If I had unlimited funds, and no care for long term ownership (a possibility) I would have gone for a fully loaded E500 (sticker probably well over 70K)... It's faster, cooler, has better brakes, interior trim, and airmatic DC.. but I don't know how my fortunes will pan out.. if they go as I hope, I'll likely get rid of the CDI well before 50K and be driving the new S.. otherwise, the E is paid off, and I could well drive it for 10 years!

Nope! Not the E, not the CLS - even though loyal to the brand thus far. But then again, I never kept any of my vehicles longer than the initial warranty.

Note: Germany only supplies a 2yr/unlimited mile warranty to the world while MBUSA supplies the 4yr/50K warranty.

Mercedes all the way!
haha, based on my previous benz experience (and thanks to the F***** tax system), i'll probably be keeping my E long after 200,000km.

i've already got a W124 that served 20 years (with a refurbish at 10 years) and is still running very strongly with a friend - makes you think about those times when 0-100 wasn't that important in a saloon car - it is SLOW, can hardly reach 100km/h, but it's majestic and a real beauty not sure about the S though - might trade up to the new one... in 5 years or so, that is :p

I would never keep my benz without warranty, thinking of buying after market warranty. In past 3 months i have brought my car 3 times for check engine lights, for some faulty sensors and you know everytime they would stick it to you for couple of hundred dollar bills at $95/hr, if it were without warranty.

With all of these "reliability" issues, I can see MB doing like KIA and introducing a 100,000 mile warranty down the road. Got to regain the trust of their customers.

Me, I've been blessed to have 0 issues at 7000 miles now.

like I said, don't worry, milage on a diesel isn't the same as milage on a gas car... drive it and have fun. There aren't even any spark plugs to change for the "tune up"... it's all adjustments and small parts here and there, and the engine will run for ever. The transmission on the other hand

I would change (flush) it's fluid every 20K if I were you, even if MB says "life time" fluid.. my ***!

[QUOTE=IluvS500]Hey guys, how many of you plan to keep your E after the warranty is up?

I plan to. I just hit 42,000 miles on my 05 CDI. I have the 100K MB warranty but remember that does not cover the electronics such as the command system ect. My thoughts are that if I start getting the frequent $1000 repairs related to the command system, drive dynamic seats ect I will dump the car. At those costs, even though I can afford it I will be turned off. Are you listening dealers and MB ? I love the way this car drives and gladly paid the premium to own it but no one likes to get hosed on repair costs relative to other cars. To me it will not be worth it and I will leave the brand.

wow! That's got to be one of the highest milage CDI's in the US.. hows the maintenance history been? What have you spend on "regular" maintenance, and how much warranty work have you had done?

Curious.. thanks.

Overall the car has been great. I think the maintenance interval charges have been a litle high. Every 13,000 miles it has been $300-400. I have just been following the book nothing special. The brakes still have at least another 10K miles left. The only warranty issue was the command system was doing some internittent strange things such as the phone not working and the radio shutting off. The dealer tried to update it with some new software but it would not accept it so they replaced the whole unit.

I chose to do far more oil changes than the 13000.. crazy!

I also switched to Mobil 1 Delvac, a proper diesel oil.
