Major problems like this should not occur these days.
I have managed to agree that MB (Germany) will pay for the replacement parts, however I am left with the very large labour bill for 20% of the repair. I AM NO LONGER A HAPPY MB OWNER.

1) More public critisism of MB quality with a recall
2) The more time goes by, the more cars will be out of warranty. This is especially true since it effects euro late 02's and 03's and early 04's for the rest of the world. This is good for MB bad for you and me.
MB should just address the issue and replace the damn radiators for the effected VIN's and prevent further customer dissatisfaction while saving the company countless thousands on entire transmission replacements down the road.
Sometimes MB just doesn't get it, or maybe they just don't want to!

1) What % of cars made up till 9/03 are being effected so far; would you venture to guess?
2) Will MB do anything on a preventative basis rather than just wait for total transmission failure and a very expensive bill; not to mention more dissatisfied MB consumers?
Wouldn't it make sense (not implying car manufactures are sensible) to replace radiators in the cars produced within this limited VIN range before the trans self destructs?

The new BMW coupe(E92 335CI) or sedan E90 335 might be a place to look. The 335 is rumored to have 300+hp and be under $50K...look for it at the Geneve show in March.
