Stereo question again

I know this subject has come up on numerous occassions, but I've done searches on the internet and here, coming across no info. I know people have been successful in adding a pair of subwoofers to the factory stereo system (with COMMAND). I understand that everything is proprietary in the stereo system. I know when installing a aftermarket subwoofer people have taken the signal from the subwoofer speaker line. Does that mean the speaker line going into the subwoofer is full range, and is crossed right at the speaker? Or is that a crossed signal?

Does that mean you can tap into a different speaker line, like the ones in the doors?

I also read about a S55 in an audio magazine that did a custom install with the factory head unit intact. Unfortunately, the only information that came out of that article was that the speaker level outputs from the head unit went into an Audio Control EQT. Other than that, most of the info was about the speakers and the physical install.

Sorry for the massive amount of questions, but I'm just trying to find some answers. Thanks for your patience in advance.

You're right. The subject has come up numerous times. Try searching this forum under (ahem) "subwoofer" for some of the relevant threads. You might also try searching the W124 forum if you have a W124 rather than a W211, or the "Audio and Electronics" forum.

Not trying to be unhelpful, just trying to point you in the right direction, since I know nothing about the substance of your question.

Thanks

Thanks for reply. Actually, I'm at the point of gathering information as I have people pulling me in the direction of either a BMW E60 or MB W211. Modding the car is a neccessity for me. I have owned an E46 as well, although I drive a W124 presently.

This automobile purchase will happen soon, as well as the mods. I have searched and found stuff on the subwoofer for the W211, but nothing on changing out the rest of the speakers and amps. Thus, I asked for help. I have been gathering information at the Bimmer sites, and they have been very helpful to someone who doesn't presently own a BMW.

I am not basing the purchase of the car on mods, but it has been part of the purchasing experience for me over the years. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I am also interested in uprading the 211 system - I have done lots of searches and come up with nothing.

My thoughts were to tap off the rear speaker outputs and use a AMP that has a remote on/off based on the signal level. This would mean the stock head unit could stay....

Please post your experiences!

Try expanding your search to include the 211 E55 and you will find a lot more posts using the term "subwoofer". Since a lot of other models have similar systems, you might include more as well. Here is just one example from the E55 forum:

Not something I would do personally but to each his own.

I am not sure if this is the answer but there is a interesting article in European Car magazine Feb 2006/volume 37 no 2 pg 25, on the JL Audio Sweep. This device , according to the article,is able to take the audio signal from the head unit, and convert it so it is usable on amps and other speakers etc. The article mentions that manufactures are attempting to shut out the aftermarket guys. In reading the threads here and in my research it seems they have done just that. I am going to stop by a local distributor and get more low down. the web address is www.jlaudio.com
