E350 pinging with premium gas

E350 pinging with premium gas

I just drove our E350 tonight with the windows down and I noticed it was pinging badly. If I took off with a good amount of throttle it would ping,and when cruising along and suddenly giving throttle it would also. It was knocking waay too much. I noticed this with a C230 V6 loaner we had too, but I figured it was because of the cheap low octane gas people put into the loaners, but we only use Shell V-Power. Is this because of the V-power, or there's something wrong with the engine? Has anyone else noticed the pinging on these new V6's?

Nope, no pinging or knocking here. Try a tank of Chevron 91 and Techron fuel system cleaner. Two bottles of that. See what happens.

Poor combustion/detonation in the cylinders due to an overly lean mixture, timing problems, octane issues or possibly just bad gas.

I had this problem in a brand new 2001 BMW when the 330CI just came out, I did not keep the car long enough to find out the cause but it is not normal in any way. Try another tank of gas, if that does not work bring it in.

First, put a can of octane booster in the current tank of gas. Second, fill up with a high quality different brand. If the pinging stops, this will eliminate bad gas as the source of the pinging.

If it doesn't, then it's dealer time. Could be a number of different things: bad knock sensor, crank position sensor etc. Worst case is excessive oil seeping past the rings or valve guides. Have you checked your oil level?

It's dealer time, period. If the engine management system is working properly, the car won't knock even with low-octane fuel. It would just have less power and/or less mileage. The fact that you're getting knocking/pinging/predetonation is sufficient evidence that something mechanical or electronic is wrong.

My parents 2006 E350 has pinging as well with Chevron 92 octane gas.. Went to dealer, tech said it was normal.

Puh-Leez... Normal my butt. Todays engine management computers have more than enough intelligence to retard the timing if they detect pre-ignition. Ask for someone to actually look at your car at the service department, not leave it parked outside all day and then blow you off!
