Question Dumb Question? How many spark plugs in E320?

I had the plugs changed in my 2003 E320 and I swear it says they used 12 plugs. Does the car have 2 plugs per cylinder? Maybe my E320 is a 12 cylinder? Maybe I am illiterate?

Hey JK,
How many miles do you have on your car? I also have an '03 E320 and I changed my plugs a short time ago at 50K miles only because of stories I've heard that 100K mile plugs tend to seize up in aluminum heads.

By the way, how much did it cost you? I paid $7.50/ea ($90) for the OEM plugs and 2 hours of my labor.

Regards,
paul...

I have just over 96,000 miles on my car. The dealer charged me about $135 for the 12 plugs. The labor charge was bundled in with the service E. That service with the spark plugs cost just under $1000.

They also changed my motor mounts under the extended warranty. The warranty has covered two repairs for me. The motor mounts and ball joints. I figure I probably broke even. The warranty cost me about $1450.

It is advisable to use anti-seize lubricant and properly torque the plugs on aluminum heads, even your lawn mower.

Does that mean E-500s have 16 spark plugs?

$7.50 per plug?? You should have bought some lube while you were at it.

They have 24 spark plugs, 3 per cylinder. The new four valve V6's and V8's will return to one plug per cylinder. BTW, the M112 V6 in the E320 and the M113 V8 in the E500 each have three valves per cylinder. The newest engines will have four valves per cylinder.

It has four valves per cylinder, one spark plug per cylinder and much more power than the M112 in the E320.

This is the same engine as in the E350.

Anti-seize compound

I do that for all spark plug changes whether they be for my cars, lawn mower, and snow blower. I noticed that when removing the car's old plugs, there wasn't any anti-seize from the factory and the plugs squealed and sweaked as I was twisting them out. Glad that I replaced them!

Paul...

You also had bad mounts and bad ball joints after 96K? Seems too early for those kind of problems.

I don't disagree but every Bosch plug I've bought in the last 20 years or so has come with anti-seize coating. I've never added any. And yes, the first tool any D.I.Y.'er should buy is a torque wrench (or two).
