Tire Cupping-again

04 e500 4-matic. I replaced my tires due to cupping @ 19000 miles.I am experiencing vibration at all speeds. Took it in to dealer. Dealer reports cupping of tires again .I only have 6000 miles on the new tires. Anyone else experiencing this? Any fixes?

You should have gotten an alignment when getting the new tires...or if you did, it wasn't done with the right specs or the car was thrown out of alignment somewhere. The cupping won't go away unless you drive harder into the turns and wear off the tread.

I am having the same problem. The tires are cupping on the inside edges . The origional tires went 30K miles and wore even . I bought Dayton UT-1 HP tires. They began cupping on the inside edges. The car went to MB for alignment check. They tell me the tires are the problem the car is "within" specs. If we use cause effect,, the only change is tires. NO alignment. Since the origional tires wore even, I must assume unless someone installed the tires and changed the alignment the tires are the issue. My guess is the belt in the tread does't cover the edges on the inside well enough allowing the tire to cup. I won't hang this on alignement alone. If it were too much toe in, I would expect inside tire wear but even all the way around the tire. The cupping is not evenly worn around. They however are balanced and give no steering wheel shimmy at any speed. Noise is becomming very loud with the cupping in rotation. So my question is if the Camber is set properly, toe is is correct has anyone else experienced cupping and if so what brand of tires. Also If you have even tire wear what brand of tire are you running. Thanks in advance. Hopefully I can drive the E500 with out ear plugs soon .

Jim

Excuse my ignorance, but what is "cupping"? And can someone post a picture? Thanks.

Cupping is an abrasion type of damage to tire treads...

My E500 has no mechanical issues but still has tire cupping. The fact that the origional tired did not cup and the new ones do is something I can't over look. I went to the speed shop specialist that does my Corvette and it is run on the track. The info I have is that the tires have belts cut too narrow not giving tread support on the inside edge of the tires, and that the alignment specs are set correctly. I have seen too many suspensions that don't need alignemnt. My 70 Pontiac had cupping on the factory tires Uniroyals, but when Michelins were installed there was no cupping so I know tires alone can cause this issue. Consider the cupping is ONLY on the inside 2" of the tire and the rest of the tire is wearing even all the way across. Toe-in will wear the tires evenly on the inside edge but not cup the tires in most cases. I plan to replace the front tires and evaluate a new tire. BTW it is relatively easy to check toe in with a tape measure and camber with an inclinometer. You can do these at home. Jim

Michelin uses a "harder" rubber than Goodyear & Uniroyal in an effort to go for longer life. Softer rubber has better "stickiness", but wears faster.
