I had that problem a couple months back after the front brakes were replaced, and it was caused by a faulty Stop Light Switch. That is a switch which activates when you touch the brake pedal. It activates your brake lights and also deactivates the cruise control if you have it on. It's a common failure item, according to my Service Advissor, after about three years. Repair made at no cost under warranty.

Brake pad service workshop message

I have the same message for a week now. 2003 E 320. 36K miles.
I have not yet replaced brake pads.
Is this something you must do as message suggests, or wait if car drives OK?

How much does dealer charge any ideas?
I am assuming this is not covered in warranty.

OK, I'm assuming that those folks who have problems have had all the Recalls/TSB's associated with the SBC braking system and associated with the battery charging problems installed by their dealer. If not, then take your car to the dealer and have them check your VIN number to see what needs to be done.

I'm also assuming that any car that's at least 3 years old has had the brake fluid changed by a dealer or another outfit equiped to do it.

See this thread... https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w211/145960-w211-recalls.html

This is the message I got with the faulty brake switch and not for worn pads. The repair was free and didn't take long. Your car should still be under warranty and it should be free.

I had all the required TSB's performed for SBC problems, noisy front brakes and the bad cable routing prior to this message. As part of the previous warranty work, they had changed brake fluid and replaced the front brake pads for free.

I do not think anything is wrong with the SBC. I would suggest Thrillhouse & Double Eagle’s solution (replace stop lamp switch) to your dealer. Curious, were the brake wear sensors replaced (Brake wear sensors: one each wheel front, one right rear wheel)?

that message has NOTHING to do with SBC, almost 99% of the cars I work on with that warning, is the stop lamp switch..........

Yes I know, just trying to clarify to Tariq (who already agrees it’s not the SBC) in response to the Kar don & BudC posts. And did I not suggest mentioning to replace the stop lamp switch to the dealer as you posted previously?

Konigstiger's curiosity is exactly the problem I had with the same message after owning the car for 2 months (03 E320). The dealer replaced the 3 sensors. never saw the message again.

Regards,
Paul...

Then I would go with the stop lamp switch change out -- it seems to be the only item left.

Does anyone know where the switch is located? They're usually under the dash at the top of the brake pedal on most other cars.

Regards,
Paul...

This brake message popped up 3 times within 2 days so I asked my SA at the dealer about it the last time I had the car in the shop for service B.

He didn't elaborate, but told me that something needed to be reset after I changed the brake pads and sensors.
(I did my own pads and sensors on all 4 corners in January about 5k miles ago - no problems until this brake message started about 2weeks ago.)
It's been a week since the car is back from the dealer now and no repeat of the brake message - so far. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

BTW, my car has had all the recall work done including the SBC ground.

Anybody have an idea what he might have meant needed to be reset after changing the pads and sensors?

This excerpt is from a WIS procedure I found on another forum for changing
the brake pads (front and/or rear):

"The following steps should be run through
in STAR DIAGNOSIS:
Select the menu item "SBC-Sensotronic
Brake Control"/"Initial startup after
repair"/"Remove/install brake pads".
Then process all the individual steps from top
to bottom."

It is interesting that many people have changed their own pads on this and other MB forums for the W211 and haven't posted anything about having a problem.

Regards,
Paul...

Tariq,

The Star Diags is the system that MB dealers use to troubleshoot/fix MB's. None of us own one because of the cost (at least $15K).

I don't understand why DalBenz had the problem after he changed the pads.

Well, that's my question too, especially since the brake notice appeared well after the brake pad change (about 4months). Again, that's what the dealer service advisor told me. The paper work did not show that any parts were replaced or any work other than the Star Diags. I wish I would have had the opportunity to ask more questions but I was in a hurry to pickup the car and leave.
