Question about window tinting for Black/Black

Hi guys,

I have 2005 E320 Appearance/Premium Package, Black on Black. I am in southern california, and the interior gets really hot during sunny days (ventilated seats helps only when I was sweaty). I am thinking about getting my windows tinted, and searched the forum for advice and learned quite a lot about what to watch out for. The bottom line is that I have a choice between 50%, 40%, and 35%. I seen 35% on a black/black w210, I think it is just too dark. I am debating over 50% all around or 40% all around. Given I have black/black car, will 50% be enough aesthetically and functionally (I also have roll-up rear shades for those really hot days) or should I go for 40%? Any pics/stories you can share would be helpful. Thanks!

I would go with at least 35% 50% would be very light on a black car. Having a black interior IMO you don't have to go super dark on the tint.

Get whatever tint you like for looks, but don't expect it to keep a black-with-black car cool in the SoCal sun. You'll still be getting a major thermal load through the body panels, thanks to the black paint. The black interior will still soak up heat from the sun, even if you get a tint that filters infrared as well as visible light. The glass you already have filters infrared, but that doesn't stop the interior from turning into an oven. Black-with-black may be chill, but it's not exactly cool. Lexus white-with-beige is a lot more comfortable in a sunny climate, but then people would take you for Luke Skywalker instead of Darth Vader, and who needs that?

I guess you are right...my interior will be hot no matter what under the sun. I'll see if I can come up with a equation for maximum tint with minimal ticket risk.

I always use 20% on my cars, which is illegal in Maryland. Guess how many tickets I've gotten for it? Cmon, guess. Zero, zippy, zilch, nada. If I do get pulled over, I just pop the sunroof and it lightens everything right up. They never even question me about it.

Oh, and 20% doesn't even keep the car cool. It's gonna be hot, no matter what you do so just go for what ever is aesthetically pleasing to you.

Per state law, I have 35% front, 20% rear & 20% back window on my black/charcoal E500. It looks really nice and it doesn’t look pimpy like black cars do with real dark limo tint (5%-15%). The interior color of your vehicle also plays an important role in how dark the tinting appears.

As far as reducing the interior heat, it helps but even in my neck of the woods, Montana, the combination of black paint & dark interior it still gets pretty damn hot. I've been using the auto down window feature on the remote key for a few minutes when I unlock the car. It really helps.

I have limo tint also, but it sounds you like the lighter shades so I would do the 35% or even the 45%. The interior color does play a role in darkness appearance so you will get a differant result from others with same shade of interior differance.

I also used the auto down window on the remote key on hot days (it even automatically turn on the ventilated seat). However, one feature I really dislike about the remote auto down window feature is it opens the sunroof as well. Imagine...100 degrees out, you roll down the window to let the heat out, but the sun shines right through the sunroof just to heat up my black leather seat and steerwheel. a bit counterintuititive in my opinion.

Actually, opening the sunroof is the most important thing to do to let the heat out. Heat rises... It goes straight up & out the sunroof creating a slight suction like action called "draft", which is how the chimney works to expell smoke from your fireplace. The room air is sucked in thru the fireplace front & goes up thru the chimney, like the ambient ourside air goes in thru your lowered windows & gets pulled into the car by the hot air leaving thru your sunroof.

Just watch the "shimmering" effect in the air over your open sunroof the first few seconds to see the heat escaping thru it.
