E550 gas mileage

What are people, who took delivery, getting for actual gas mileage? I'm trying to decide between E550 and used E55 and this is one of several factors that might swing me if it is not so different. I was getting 20+ mpg on the highway with my C55 5.4 liter AMG engine.

I'll bet you get close to the same mileage on an E550.

The engine, transmission, and axle ratio are identical to the S550. I would expect the E550 highway mileage to be the same. Some of the W221 guys are reporting 25 mpg on long trips. Check out this link: https://mbworld.org/forums/s-class-w221/149018-he-s-baaaack.html

Since the E weights 580 lbs less than the S, I would hope the mileage is at least 10% better. Picking my E550 up Monday but I don't think autobahn mileage will be indicative of normal mileage.

Oddly enough, the EPA has rated the E550 one mpg lower than the S550, both city and highway.

My E550 is sitting at the dock in Germany waiting for ship assignment. Our cars may travel to Long Beach on the same ship. Enjoy your trip to Germany, and when you get back be sure to let us know your driving impressions.

The MPG rating had me wondering also. I not going to get a E550 Euro delivery.

I could not past up the MB lease special for August (27 mos). Getting a
2007 E350 tonight. Had a offer I couldn't refuse.

2007 E350/sport/white/cashmere/PII.
Parktronic, ET Closer, Wd Wheel was included for $6 a month more.
My total cost for the extra options was $162 for 27 mos. The dealer
really wanted to deal yesterday!

Return this for the 2009 W212 or a SWB S450 if we see it here(US)

I'll try to find a digital camera and shoot some photos.

I get about 12mpg on my E55. The E500 gets about 20mpg!

So I guess I could expect a few mpg lower than what you posted for your E320 4matic (about what I got from my C55).

Have to add by $.05 (inflation)

E500 40k miles
Highway, 60mph in NE hills 24-25mpg
Town traffic, 20mph 18mpg, stop lights and other cars pulling in and out
My 30 miles commute along secondary roads, average 40mph, 20-22mpg depending on traffic lights and clueless motorists. If I run it to dry, on a good week I can see 400+miles on a tank. Usually I'm filling up at around 380+miles per tank.

I have found little difference between air on/off windows up/down. The number of times you have to accelerate from a stop (assuming you do more than crawl forward with 1/8th throttle!) seems to have the greatest impact.

My wife's 4matic wagon averages about 1-1.5mpg worse.

Exclamation Gas milage concerns on a $65M car?

I find it somewhat humorous that there is a long discussion on MPG on cars that cost between $60-80M. Does someone who pays that kind of $ have as a significant concern, the cost at the pump? While I agree that the cost of gas is abscene, there is little we can do about it. So many other factors are more important in the decision process. I get about 23 miles per gallon combined freeway and city streets. A car with 30 MPG is not going to attract me away from an MB and the outstanding experience it has been over the last 18 months.

My 2 cents...

Glad you are amused.

Agreed. If I paid that much I wouldn't care about the 'expense'.

I agree that the cost of gas is abscene
More obscene than abscene, I think.

Would 12 mpg disuade you from the model you chose? What would move your needle (8 mpg perhaps)? Maybe you have no threshold.

I was curious about the gas mileage because it does matter to me (within certain parameters, for personal expense reasons) but also for conservation and political reasons.

How about a nice Toyota Prius? It would be sooooo much more socially correct than a used E55.

OK, I don't want to be that political about it.

Agreed, and there's more to it than that. I know it's not a performance car like the e500, etc, but in the $40k-$60k price range that the e320 finds itself in, gas mileage is a real consideration for many of its potential owners. As evidence of this, Mercedes has invested lots to be able to offer a low-sulphur diesel burning engine for the E class in the USA. In Germany, the diesel E class costs literally half as much to run as the comparable gasoline engined E class. (I haven't considered whether diesel engines require more investment to keep running than gas engines- no idea). That adds up to more than $1000 per each 10,000 miles driven. This affects resale value too. In fact, gas models need to be drastically discounted to sell in Germany while the diesels go for sticker.

Yes, I feel lucky to be able to afford such a nice car, but that doesn't mean I sneeze at savings like these!

This thread is about the fuel consumption of the E550 versus the E55. I think most owners of these V-8 cars are less concerned with operating costs (and total ownership costs) than the average buyer of the 6-cylinder cars.
