If there are three sections to the roof and the (I think) rear section looks like a big solar panel (this is going by a photo that could be lighted to show the panel clearly), then you have the solar panel option. It is not small, it must be 2/3rds the size of the standard sunroof panel leaving you with something like two standard sunroofs and then a 2/3rd section of solar panel. It is pictured in the 2003 & 2004 brochures. My 2006 brochure, when they did not offer the panel, only shows an opaque glass section in that area.

I'm not sure if the climate control has any special button or if the rest function just behaves differently.

If I remember correctly, the solar panel I saw on a 2003 E500 was a narrow strip between the top of the windshield and the front of the first pano roof. If the car has it, it's very noticeable.

They only had them for 2003 and 2004 E classes. I think they were discontinued 2005 and after.

Here are what the solar panels look like (this is Vic55's car):

I'm not sure whose car this is but it also shows the solar panels:

The Solar Panel Powers a small ventilation fan to vent the interior cabin out on hot days. Not to heat it.

What about dropping the windows & opening the roof with the smart key before you get in?

The solar panel was an additional option which could be ordered along with the pano Roof. Pano roof was approximately 1250 and the solar panel was an additional 950 or so. Pretty expensive I would say and also quite rare. Hard to imagine this ever made sense on the development side but MB was a bit different back in the planning days for the 211. It was only offered for a year or two and then discontinued.
