2006 e350: bent rims twice

I have had Mercedes since 1990 (with the exception of the first, all have been 4-matics).

My year old e350 has been marvelous -- not a problem anywhere except:

I have bent two front rims -- passenger then driver's side -- during the year I've owned the car.

I didn't have this problem with any of the others driving on the same roads in New York City and upstate.

I have the stock contis.

Any suggestions (no I won't move).

Thanks.

There was a time when Mercedes alloys were forged alloys. Now they are cast.

The alloys on my 2004 E320 already show some damage. The alloys on my '91 300E are unmarked.

Tire Pressure?

Go to a higher pressure. I routinely carry 32 psi in the front. Still works well in the rain and don't really notice a ride change. Michelins. MXV

Did your previous Benzes have low-profile tires like your current one? If your driving habits and tire pressures haven't changed, then less sidewall could be the variable to explain your two bent rims. The dirty little secret of low-profile tires is that, other things being equal, they are noisier and harsher-riding, and transmit more road shock to the rims. Or it could just be bad luck ...

Cost of doing business when you're running such low profile tires.

17"

my dealer suggested michelins instead of the stock contis.
my son -- who drives an allroad -- suggested that i get vredesteins, which, according to him, have stronger sidewalls.

any tire suggestions out there?

Mercedes E350, E550s on it's way!
I've had your problem. A few suggestions to add to the list,
1. Steer clear of uneven cement, and raised manholes.
2. Move slowly up curved curbs, occasionally hitting them just right can ruin your rims.
3. Select routes that are free of short turns to avoid hitting a curb or construction of course.

I guess pretty much what the others have said.

Sorry I mean beaded tires. They have extra reinforcement of rubber where the tire "meets" the rim..

The shock transmits THROUGH the tire to the wheel.

If anything, you need a SOFTER tire, i.e. one that will absorb shock.

But with a 45 sidewall, you won't get much shock absorbtion.

As I said, cost of doing business. Drive carefully.
