Purchase Price For Used 2003 E-320

Newbie here looking for veterans' advise.
Given the glut of MB in the market, I have been looking carefully. Does a sales price of $28K for a 2003 E-320 w/ around 16,000 miles sound good? I've seen them for less but they all have miles over 30K.
Also, assuming this has been serviced, should I be concerned about any gremlins that might hit me when I buy the car that MB service couldn't take care of if I brought the car in?

thanks!

You don't say what the source is (ie MB dealer, private, etc) or what part of the country. Also what equipment including 4Matic?.

Importantly, search the forum and you will find that '03 was a problematic year for many, especialy with the electronics.

Lastly, if you pursue it, do a CarFax report. The price is certainly reasonable. Good luck !

Starbrite: Thanks for the feedback.
Ok- location is Southern CA; small independent dealer (virtually like a private party since he has done nothing to the car), and on the options, I don't know except his ad states "premium package".
Can I have the electrical issues handled by a call to MB service to see what has been done to the car, or simply bringing it in upon purchase since these problems are well known by now and could be avoided by a fix in advance?

MB can tell you the service history...just supply the VIN.There really is no "advance" fix other than recalls that may or may not have been done on the car.

We paid 33K for a similar car 5 months ago. Obviously 28 looks good to me. I would take a careful look at the body. Usually a hit on the front will put them down in that range. IF you can't tell, it does not matter anyway. I have put very few miles on mine but I absolutely enjoy driving it. Went back to the dealer an had a minor problem resolved with a loose battery cable. Your car should still have a few months of warranty left. I would never have paid 50+ for it new. Someone else drove it for over a $1 / mile. They could have taken a cab everwhere. I really don't know about the reliability issue. If that is a concern- go Lexus. I like the W211 body so much more than the previous but it is a crap shoot. M-B shop rates are certainly enough to ruin my day. PS if you have not, just take a brief overview of the 300 plus page owners manual. Even the low option cars like mine have enough bells and whistles to keep you entertained for a while. Good hunting.

Also bear in mind that a Benz that was traded in to a dealer would be "certified" for resale by him at a higher price. There should be some reason why a dealer would "pass" on this car so it would therefore go out to auction & end up on an independent used car lot, not a "certified pre-owned" car at the dealer.

Definitely do a carfax AND run the VIN thru an MB service department's computer system to see if there are any deal-breaker issues. A Troublesome E Class will drain your pockets faster than your wildest dreams could conjure up.

Hey, I got an '03 e-320 from a dealer with only 9k for about 37k. I got it in dec of '05 and the warranty runs out in july of '07... that's for the original 4 year 100K warranty. it took me about a month to find out that there were some problems with the car that were recall related and i ended up taking it to the dealer a total of about six times over an eight month period. but it's been running excellent now and it now has about 29K on it (i do alot of driving).... so to make a long story short, I think that you should immediately go to a MB dealership and find out:

1) when it was made from the VIN (that'll tell you when you have until for your warranty)
2) if they can find out when/how/why it was fixed if ever
3) if there is still a warranty on it, will they cover it, cause if it is under warranty, don't step foot anywhere but an authorized dealership or you'll pay major mula
4) you prolly only have about a year or less left which I dunno if it will allow you enough time to feel out the car... get to know that car like it's your wife..... and quick!!!!! or see if the dealership or a trusted mechanic will do an inspection of it.

If they won't letcha take it off the lot, there's a reason why, so fahget about it.

that's my $0.02

Shouldn't the dealer have taken care of all the recalls as part of the CPO program before you bought?

I'm shopping for a CPO E-Class.

Later, Mike
