Well, yes, the photorealistic illustration is just that, an illustration and not a photo. Mercedes-Benz isn't quite ready to hand out actual photos of the W212, posed attractively on a turnout someplace above the Aegean. Still, the illustration seems to depict the basic shape of the masked car in the actual photos, and if the masked car isn't the W212, what is it? There are some apparent detail differences between the photos and the illustration, for instance, the fogs and the structure beneath the headlights. If the article is correct that the W212 will be first shown in 2009, presumably as a 2010 model, I'm surprised that M-B is running the masked prototypes on public roads this early. That part of the buzz-building striptease doesn't usually start until about a year before the auto show debut.

I've seen that shot before, it's alright, doesn't really faze me since seem like MB is going with the design direction on all of their lineup. THis one looks like a Lexus GS Headlight, it doesn't seem too exciting, just Ho-hum design.

Those pics looks like a more believable spy shots as you can clearly tell they have not even started with the styling yet but instead focusing on components and chassis development. Personally I don't think they will let you see any pics of the next E class until somewhere in 09, they are going to hurt the W211 sales right now by releaseing pictures right now. Plus they also have to worry about Lexus copying their designs.

Trust me, I am coming from a W210 and been looking at more than 1000 W211s, the new E-class will be the best looking E-class Merc has ever built in history. This S-class look is inresistable. Lexus GS will find a hole to hide when this prince of Merc sedan is launched.
What I am really puzzled, is why Merc finally decided to keep "4 eyes" on the E-class while a year back I thought I already knew all Merc new models should drop out the 4-eyes? ( Now, all new S, C, CL are "two eyes")

Old and new looks, hopefully for the better
While tastes differ, I think MB has been doing very well with regards to its looks since the introduction of the W203 in '01. Throughout the range really (C, E, S, SL, SLK, CLK etc.).
Then looking within the range of MB'en, I find the pre-facelifted W211 front (the flowing lines of the hood, dual lights, bumper, fenders) just of epic beauty. Hopefully something they can match or better (if possible...) on the W212. Also the dash in the W211 is outstanding.
I think a lot of us would agree it is possible to loose it... the much talked about 5 series (current e60 vs previous e39).
Have attached pics of the W211 front and dash, the E39 dash (another epic design IMO and something the MB engineers have probably taken the best parts of when creating the W211) and the E60 dash (plasticy, some alu pieces slapped onto it, ugly straight transition dash to door, ugly raised middle part of the dash, not for me...)
So lets hope they were and will continue to be on a role when creating the new looks on the W212.

Looking at the new E-class and C-class photos, it is now more I believe Merc is drawing a much thicker line between a saloon and a sports sedan, this implies the new E-class will no longer be seen as 'sport' as much as the current and tends to be closer to the S-class line.
