OK, Why "distinguish" between the 2 Smartkeys

I am trying to figure out my SmartKey settings. I was hoping that each key would set the seats and mirrors to my setting for my key; my wife's for hers. I find nowhere in the operators manual that states this is the case. So then I have to ask... If both key only unlock the door, why are they "a different color to help distinguish each key unit." ???

I do have the "Key dependant" turned on as well as the "Steer. Col.. + seat".

Each key WILL bring up different climate control, mirror & seat positions when you start the car, not before you enter it, and start it.

Ahhh. Sure enough you are correct. Thanks for the enlightenment. Too bad it isn't like my Jeep Grand Cherokee - when I press unlock it changes the seat and mirror settings. The problem I have is that I am 6'4" and my wife is 5'4". I can't even get in the car until the seat is moved back from her setting. I realize I could get a new wife, but I worked hard to get the one I have. I could say the same for the car - I want to keep it also. Thanks Barry

The seat should move to a very rearward position when you remove the key to allow easy exit and entry. Then after starting the car it should move to the position it was last in with that key.

Yup. I never understood why anyone would want the seat memory system in a car to activate before you get int and start the car. If the easy exit feature worked properly in the E, the seat would move rearward for you to get out. You wouldn't want to unlock & have it move forward before you got in, would ya?

In my '02 Caddy Deville it was ownwer programmable whether the memories would resume at "Unlock" or "Key in ignition"... Guess which one makes sense?

I am not sure if the easy exit feature is working properly. It moves the seat back about 2" after you shut off the car and remove the key. (Not all the way back.) That 2" is not enough for me to comfortably squeeze my legs in when I get in after my wife has driven, this is why I liked the Jeep that sets the seats prior to me getting in. It worked for me and my wife. I can understand the logic that Mercedes has; it is like scooting your chair up to the table after you sit down, and scooting it back before you get up. However in my case, the large difference between my height and my wife's cannot be made up by the seat only going back 2". It would need to go back much more.

It will not go to the maximum rear position, however in some cars the dealer can make an adjustment to get some more but not full rear deflection. If your seating position is very much to the rear it will not actually move any more when you take the key out. On my 05 when I purchased it new did not move far enough to the rear and my dealer actually got about another inch and a half. Reason I was told that they do not move full rear is to avoid the possibility of crushing a rear seat passenger's feet. FYI, I love this feature and I have been told it was removed on the 06 and up. If its not reinstated I will not purchase another E. I really do not like all of MB's decontenting and this E was my 5th MB purchase since 1998.

Its not in my '07. There is no seat movement any more just the wheel goes up. You have the choice of both or just the wheel.

In my Caddy, you had to pre-memorize the exit position, and thats where the seat would travel to upon exit, (so the owner, not the manufacturer is responsible for any feet squashing). With MB, they have determined the exit position. Early on, people here were reporting that their dealers would re-set the exit position with their Star Laptops, to a more further back position.

I guess MB figured that there was too much complaining about this frivolus item, so they turned it off in the American car's software.

In the '07, they seem to have turned off anything that American owners *****ed about, so that there would be no complaining, which would help restore their customer satisfaction scores. Personally, I'd rather everything that's in the car works perfectly, & stuff that was flawed get the hook.

The smart key seat positions have nothing to do with the seat memory or for that matter any other memory in the car. It does remember the last position it was in and returns to that position. Is not and can't be linked to the seat memory.
