real dipstick possible?

I know this will sound crazy but mine isn't there
. Your photo showed the red cap which is the same as on my tranny tube, but there is nothing where your photo showed. If I knew how to post a photo on this site I could take an identical photo. But after looking at your photo,, I am guessing Mercedes
saved a few $$ by not installing the dipstick tube. Thank you for the photo... Jim

I was not able to snake a dipstick tool down the tube on the SL500 with the 113.963 engine variant. I did barely get a reading on the tip of the SLK350 oil dipstick.
We were able to vacuum out the oil from the tube without any problems.
I will check the STAR Service DVD and to see if there is a good description of the oil dipstick tube for the non-4Matic. The AT tube has a "locking" cap. It may be that you can't find the AT tube (if there is one). I did not see a an AT dipstick tube on the 2005 SL500 with 7-speed AT.
...as for service, there are very few qualified service people to successfully work on these E Class 211's outside of the dealership. There are a few former MB or BMW techs who open their own shops, but their number is low.
As I posted earlier I normally change my diesel engine oil regularly with a trustworthing independant mechanic. When I went back to MB for a non oil change service light (C service I think) they refused to reset it, saying they do not know what oil my mechanic used and as part of the service is an oil change they cannot reset my light.
Now that is what I call obstructive behavior. Is it legal to do that in the USA?
This MB dealer is the biggest dealership in Canada, located in their Toronto Headquarters.

My sold 1999 E55 still had the dipstick but by that time they had changed the construction to a flimsy wire (flexible cable) with a red piece of plastic at the end. I guess it is an attempt at weight reduction as well as costs.
My 2006 E320 CDi has a cheap red plastic cap worse then the worst made in China McDonald happy meal toys. No dipstick. This is cheap for a luxury car and shouts "do not touch your car - pay me a lot to do it".
Anyone that thinks lack of a dipstick is the end of the world and having one to check the oil is super important surely doesn't know enough about automobiles to be trusted to do it.
This is a nonproblem folks.

Very much appreciated. 2003 E500 and still looking for the danged tube.
