07 E550 gas mileage - why so low?

the 5.5L engine puts out very similar performance #s as the M113 5.5L AMG motor, but why is it rated at only 14 city/20 hwy? even a 1999 E55 (almost 8 years ago!) had 17 city / 24 hwy. wouldn't you think gas #s would significantly increase in 8 yrs time??

The '07 E550 is rated at 15 city/23 highway (not 14/20) and I routinely get 25 or 26 mpg on the highway at 70-75 mph. The new 5.5L also puts out higher horsepower and torque than the 1999 E55.

After 6000 miles, I've been averaging around 20 mpg, with mostly highway driving and a heavy foot in the city.

The method which they calculate MPG on the car was recently changed. So it's tested in different conditons to reflect real world driving. Previously, you'll get "best case" MPG. Now you're getting average to "worst case". 550 engine is more economical compare to previous 55 AMG. You also have 7spd vs. 5spd tranny to save you gas.

20 all around mpg in a 550! I'd be jumping with joy. I get 21 in my 06 E350 and I'm pleased. But my next E will be a diesel. Right now for the first time, I'm seeing diesel costing less than premium.

Thats because in the N.E. we're coming out of heating season & demand is lessening for #2 from the refineries. Its Supply & Demand.

I just got a 2007 E350 a couple of weeks ago and the main purpose for getting it was to save money on gas since my GL 450 has been eaten up about $80 a week at average a little above 12mpg (mostly city in San Francisco). However, after about 200 miles on my E350, it shows less than 14mpg. Can anyone tell me why???????? Should it be more closer to what MB stated at around 19 mpg for city?

Thank you in advance for solving my confusion.

It has to break in & "loosen up" a bit... at least 1500-2000 miles on the odo.

14mpg...

Dunno about loosening up a "bit" sounds like you need a whole lot a loosening up!

That's really odd. I have a E500 and with an avg speed per tank of gas around 35-40mph, i consistantly get 20mpg....

all of your numbers sound low to me.
