05 320 CDI acceleration problem

This car has been in for 10 days because the fuel gauge would not display properly. We decided to give it a full tank test to run it through (the computer) it's paces. But driving home today getting off the highway the car would not accelerate and ran rough and louder than normal. Has this happened to anyone?
Thanks.

05 CDI acceleration problem

Car does not go past 1500 rpm with pedal to floor. Nor mor than 35 mph. Limped home. This diesel has been in more than my 87 sdl with 220k.
Anybody have similar problem on gas or diesel?

211.026 (e320 CDI)

Mention DTB P-B-07.16/55b MAR07 May be caused by the EGR valve binding and consequently exceeding the set point and causing the limp mode condition. A modified EGR valve (part # A646 140 19 60) will be installed together with modified engine ECU software.

Fortunately no one here had this experience. Keep us posted.

I do not understand a thing you are saying but am glad you can diagnose the fault for 12voltman.

Why is it necessary to modify the ECU software if the fault lies with the EGR?

You mean "limp home mode"? Should not be that uncommon, like after a MAF failure. Of course not frequent either, I've never seen it myself.

A different thing to diagnose the cause for limp mode, hopefully the advice from konigstiger helps.

And you think I do?

As I understand it the EGR malfunction could exceed the lean condition under certain RPM/load, temperature and fuel quality conditions of the current software version. The software has been modified to accommodate the modified EGR valve. After the software flash injector coding will be verified. The combined modifications should resolve engine performance complaints.

Lastly, it has not been confirmed that this is, in fact, the problem - more so just a suggestion on the path to righteousness.

You usually can tell if you are in limp home mode by pulling off to the side of the road, turning the car off and wait a couple of minutes before restarting. If it's the "mode" your car will probably run normally for a while.

You also can read about this in your owners manual.

Wink Limp mode

Thanks for your responses. Startes up this morning and everything worked as it should. Drove to dealer, made appointment for Tuesday. I am now on a first name basis with the service rep (I do not think that is good). He said probably a transmission relay. Ok so nowadays everything is electronically connected sooo, I drive 45 miles up the turnpike (ok now you know I'm from NJ, don;t worry I can take what is coming).
Like yesterday after I sleEZyPASSed my way through the toll (15 mph) ok so it may have been a little more but you still are innocent till proven (I think).
But than like yesterday (same circumstances) LIMP MODE. I rember reading something about this in the manual. (yes I did read it). Thought it might be the fly by wire stuff but checked the rubber mat first. So today I cruised to the first light, put it in nutral and revet to 3200 or so fine. Put it in in shift mode and it rev to 2000rpm before I shifted. Made it to third than some @%$*&@(** trucker cut me off! Went to drive and .... LIMP MODE.
Got my am coffee and restarted the car 1/2 hr later. Ran fine and had enough juice to cut off a ~!)(**) trucker just because! (we're like that in NJ)
Great forum! Thanks for the feedback and I will keep you posted.

I had exactly the same experience. It's the EGR valve, which needs to be replaced with a newer version.

See this link to my prior posting of same problem. Hope you get it figured out. Sounds like EGR.
