I agree, 66k miles just isn't common, on the 2003 it should come earlier :-) Actually MB had a recall on the front lower ball joints. They had two manufacturers and the other one was replaced even if there was no visible slack.

It may not always be easy to detect, jacking the car up helps.

Ball joints are your likely problem.

I wonder if MB will cover this, if it was a recall on you model. Look into that.

Service campaigns do not expire therefore have a MB dealer check VMI to see if your vehicle is included in the following campaign and if so, when you bring in the vehicle mention the following DTBs. Also have them check to see if all applicable recalls and service campaigns have been performed.

Service campaign 2006040004 JUL06 – 211.065 (e320) VIN range A014562-A60000, X097696-X116123 Dealer will clean the rear sleeves and install new bolts & washers.

*** DTB P-B-33.15/22 FEB07 Squeaking/thumping noise from front axle; Upper ball joint sealing boot on upper control arm may be damaged and will be replaced.

Additional front end related problems that you may experience:

DTB P-B-46.40/53 JAN07 Cracking/creaking noises from steering rack area at slow speeds or when the vehicle is stationary, the washers and nuts between steering mounting plate and sub-frame will be replaced.

DTB: P-B-33.10/21 FEB07 Vehicle pulls slightly to one side when braking at low speeds and may be accompanied by small movement of the steering wheel; the lower ball joint on the side to which the vehicle pulls will be replaced.

Sqeaky Ball Joint

Any details on how to determine if the problem is the upper or lower ball joint. Or, just replace both while your in there? Any other parts I should replace while I'm in there?

I'm planning to contact my local dealer as recommened to see about any service campaigns.

However, if I find it is not something they'll take care of does someone have some detailed instructions?

BALL JOINTS

I just had the same thing happen to me. I took my 2003 E-320 to the dealer ( I have the CPO extended warranty) and they replaced my ball joint on the right side. Problem and noise was gone and now I am enjoying my ride again... No hassels and no further problems... I have been impressed with the service and quality of work they do.

+1

I had the same problem and they replaced the ball joints. I had them replace both sides just to make sure. Find a reputable mercedes repair shop, they can do it for less than the dealer charges.

Do you know if they did the upper or lower, or both?

Thanks,
