Welcome. There is a good chance you won't like these when you get them. The majority consensus is they look like crap. I can say that first hand as I did the newbie mistake and bought them as well, I never installed them and they went right on ebay. Due to the bumper design and exhaust tip direction exiting the muffler, tips do not look good on these cars. They look fine from back but terrible from the sides. You have limited choices on doing something, most include a new exhaust and new bumper or cutting your current one. Search this forum and you'll find lots of posts on choices.

Thanx for you comment. A friend of mine told me that he cut his bumper in this shop to make the tips not fall under the bumper... he says that by doing this, the tips will hide well, and it wont look bad at all from the sides... do you think this might work?

That would look better but I am not sure it would work. If I recalll the stock exhaust downturn comes about flush with the bottom of the bumper. I'm not sure you could get the tip on the exhaust to sit up high enough. I ended up changing my exhaust and cutting the bumper. Search and you'll find mine and others who have done it.

I have them on my car,and they are EXACTLY like the second picture from your link. I didn't cut the bumper,but I'm real happy with them... Get them from Ebay,they are about half the price from the link you've provided...

I have dual tips on my car. I didn't cut the bumper and think they are OK.
I posted several pictures couple of weeks ago- you can search for all my postings. I'm happy w/ the quality of the tips but considering repositioning them a bit higher (closer to bumper or even cutting the bumper).

I have the the dual exhaust tips and mounted them as high as possible. I had to trim the OEM exhaust pipe as someone mentioned that it turns downward and limits how high the chrome tip can be mounted. I've recently cut/trimmed the bumper just above the tips, approx. 2-1/4" x 8-1/2" section. Not bad.

The next thought is to place a trim piece around the cut edge, much like the E350/E500 sport versions. Note they have plastic lip, oval shape painted the body color.

PICS!! This is exactly what I want to do. Were you able to mount the tips high enough so that they actually look good from the side? Which tips did you use? Are the mymercedes.com and ebay variety of tips identical?

TIA,

Will

As most will comment... they are the least preferred method. Most cut the rear bumper and mounted aftermarket muffler set up. I however did not cut the bumper. It is very easy to get these tips up on the tailpipe extension and "tuck" them in while cutting the bumper. Becareful on alignment b/c the further up into the body they go... the more they move to the outside of the body. Ie.. the tailpipe is angled down and in... so moving up will put the further out too.

Here is my E350 with the tips. YOU CAN see the curve in the tips from the side view. I like them and don't mind the way they install. They can also be taken off easily without issues.

Ok, ok, its too dark to take pics now. I'll have to do it in the morning. As for whether the tips are the same on ebay versus formymercedes, NO. There's a big difference, whether the exhaust actually travels thru the tip ends. The ebay versions are fake, the exhaust actually travels downward, directly toward ground and not out the tips. The tips from formymercedes is made by Schaetz and properly exhausts thru the tips.

Ok these are taken 15" off the ground and you can just see the cutouts. I'm considering to increase the cutout abit more, another 1/2", thus total cutout 2-3/4" x 8-1/2".

I had to cut off the existing tailpipe about 2" at a diagonal. Used a jigsaw blade, 4-1/2" long.

These pics are taken at 4' high and you can not see the cutouts at all. That's why I'm thinking of enlarging the cutouts abit. I'd like be able to see the cutouts from a normal viewing height.

A few more notes for you guys daring to do these cutouts;

- The cutout is NOT symmetrical. Look at my cutouts, straight on, and it appears that the outer corner is tighter than the inner corner. But actually the corners have been cut identically. Thus the inner corner needs to be tighter, ie. more like a right angle compared to the outer.

- Since the bumper curves under the rear of the car quite abit, much of the cutout is that "flat area" underneath. This part was directly touching the top of the exhaust tips. And from what I've seen on other exhausts including the E sport version, there's about an inch clearance between the exhaust tip and plastic bumper edge.

- If you guys are abit more patient, to allow me refine my cutouts, I'll work on creating a template. It'll be a few weeks from now. I'm on vacation for the next two weeks.

Looks good! This seems like the perfect setup, I'd go magnaflow but I honestly dont care for the sound and have not found tips that look as good as these.

looks good! yea i think you need to cut it a little bit more, like an inch more... I already ordered the tips! a really good shop down here that specializes in bullet proof cars will do the cuts for me... ill post some pics when i have it done..

i also ordered the E63 lip spoiler... looks pretty sweet...

Thanx for the pictures... if you have some pics of the vehicle from far away, to compare with other E55 pics, that would be owasome..

seahonu i have a question....

The more you cut the bumper up, and put the exhausts higher up, does the tips move more inward towards the front of the vehicle?

What i understand is that the higher you go, the more outwards to the left and right the tips will move, but will it move inwards aswell? Anyway to solve this? i like to be able to see the tips sticking out of the car....

thanx!

Yes, yes... if talking about the tips movement relative to where the bumper cutout is. So you can not have the cutout too large or too high up the bumper, thus making the tips "disappear" or too short. Honestly, I would have wanted these tips to be abit longer because of that. In any case, this was the most inexpensive path, versus replacing the pair of mufflers at etc.

And relative to the "look" of a E55 or sport version, admittedly those look much better. But I'd say its about halfway there on achieving the look with these Schaetz tips.

You mentioned of a shop doing this for you. Would they be willing to sketch out a template of the final cutout on yours? Since I'll be gone for two weeks, maybe you'll be done with the final cutout before me.

Isnt there a way to make the muffler move outwards a little bit more? or extend these tips outwards by adding a little extension to the muffler?

With that Schaetz tips, there's no way to "extend" them since it slides up the downward tailpipe. I guess you could extend it but that would be a custom job and not use the Schaetz tips. For what its worth after my 1st attempt at this, ie. exposed exhaust tips, I would categorize three (3) options, each step further in cost;

1) Schaetz tips and mild cutout on the lower section of the bumper, ~3"

2) Custom work, cut the OEM tailpipe and extend/weld new chrome directly outward from the OEM muffler and have a major cutout, possibly up 5"

3) New sport version or AMG bumper/exhausts, $$$
