How many restarts to reset check engine light?
3 times I've had my check engine light come on in 2+ years. Each time the dealership says the code indicated a loose gas cap and they've cleared it. I've been told after a number of restarts the CEL would turn off assuming the gas cap is on securely. Well, the light is on again and has been for a month. Anybody know roughly how many restarts it takes to turn off the CEL?
Never had this problem before with other cars. Previously I blamed my wife for not tightening the cap all the way. But this time it must be me because she hasn't driven it for a couple of months.
Just disconnect the battery for half an hour and try that. But most of the time with the check engine light caused by the gas tank it went away after you opened the gas cap and put it back on.
Wait I take that back, the E class has 2 batts and it would take a while to figure out how to unhook the front one...
Best bet is to fill up the car a little more then wiggle the nozzle around to hold that gas flap down so the pressure comes out.
Usually in AZ we have this happen all the time but the E classes it has never happen on used to just happen on our old S class.

Andrew - Thanks for the idea but sounds like more trouble than it's worth (even more trouble than the dealership). I'll give it a couple more weeks and take it in then if it doesn't go off.
