Pay for diagnosis while under warranty?

Our 07 e350 has a service c light on. The dealer told my wife there would be a $125 diagnostic fee. How could this be the car only has 7000 miles on it.The light came on at 5500 miles.Has anybody had to pay a fee for checking a car that is practically brand new?

Thanks,Chris

A service C light merely means a type C service, which involves varius kind of checking, is needed. You don't pay the dealer anything unless he PERFORMS the C service, definitely not a stealership diagnostic fee. Hell, the car already did the C service diagnosis for you!

A discussion of the types of service A, B, C, is in this forum specifically for W211's.

A diagnostic fee for what?!? sounds like a scam or we're missing details.

I'd go there and personally find out what the hell he told that to your wife and if its some way to scam $125 out of her, I'd make sure my service C was free or you'll report them to MBUSA, BBB, etc.

Now there could be a $125 fee if she said something and it was interpreted wrong or she mentioned something about an item not normally covered under warranty.

Regardless, I say you tell us which dealership this is.

I will let you know when I find out more details what was said. But really what can go wrong at 7000 miles the car has been nothing but a pleasure so far.

The service reminders appear based on time or miles, whichever comes first. Had this happen with my new '07 550. Service "C" was indicated after only 3500 miles and ownership of 6 months. The dealer is supposed to reset the service portion of the computer when they sell you the car, so the meter starts running on the purchase date. If the dealer doesn't do this, the meter shows elapsed time since the build date, which can give you an alert for service before it's actually due. Does the alerts say "days past" or "miles past?" Regarding the $125--to quote Spicoli from Ridgemont High, "Bogus."

It started counting down about 28 days ago. "days".

Sounds like a simple reset. I dont remember our salesman doing anything like that.

How do you like that 550?

Well long story short she didnt talk to a service advisor she spoke to a female service receptionist who mentioned the possibility of a checkout fee to cover her butt.

supposedly there is a way for us to reset it ourselves.

My dealer also forgot to reset mine at delivery, and offered to reset it for free. They shouldn't charge you anything, since it was their mistake. You can also reset it yourself (like I did) from the service menu. To get to the service menu, set your MFD to outside temperature, then press the reset button quickly 3 times. This should bring up the voltage display. Now scroll through the service menu with the + or - buttons until you find something about "service complete" or something like that. Of course, now you will have to take the car in for service at 1 year or 13,000 miles without a reminder from the car.

I had the same dilemma, and chose to not reset (being reminded constantly that I am "over" my service date) and just wait to synch it up with miles/time when I actually do the first "C" service so I can be synchro-ed going forward.
