Great article! Probably the most comprehensive one yet. I am disappointed that 0-60 time for the E-500 is factory rated at 6.2 sec. That's not impressive for this size engine.

0-60 time controversy

I think the factory rating is still to be determined. On the MBUSA website, in the "perrformance" section of the "features" of the E500, the indication remains "TBA" as to 0-60 time. It is true that the side by side comparison section shows it as 6.2 seconds. But that conflicts with the early promotional brochure which stated "under 6 seconds" and with the 0-100 km/hour (that is 0-62.5 mph) indications of MB sites in other countries for the E500 which state it to be 6.1 seconds. That would translate to 5.8 to 5.9 seconds for 0-60 mph.

Does anyone know why the MBUSA site still has no direct indication of 0-60 time. Has anyone emailed or called MBUSA to find out?

Trying to call MBUSA is a waste of time. If it is not printed in the brouchure, they are clueless.

Here are the 0 - 60's on the other MBs with the same engine (based on 302 HP). All from MB.

E500 - 6.2
SL500 - 6.1 seconds
CLK500 - 5.7 seconds
CL500 - 6.1 seconds
S500 - 6.1 seconds

Faster? Here are my thoughts -- CLK500, OK (its smaller and lighter); SL500, OK (it's $100K, it should be); CL500, Maybe (its also about 100K); and S500, No Way (size, weight, etc)!

There are always political and legal reasons why manufacturers may not necessarily list the correct spec for a vehicle, especially when it comes to power output and performance...mainly emissions related specs. Just because it says 6.2s does not mean it can't still outrun an S500 to 60.

W211 & Q7
S 500 -- 4133 lb.
CL 500 -- 4070 lb.
SL 500 -- 4045 lb.
E 500 -- 3815 lb.
CLK 500 -- 3660 lb.

all of them use 4966cc 302 HP engines.

obviously, the MB's philosophy is money can make car run faster.

here is the formula

speed = distance / time * cp

where cm is coefficient of price
(cp is same as cd, lower is better)

MBUSA is notorious for listing incorrect performance figures, such as 0-60 times. They listed the C32 AMG's 0-60 time as 5.2 seconds, however a lot of car magazines were reporting it as 4.8. One car magazine (AutoCar) reported it as 4.6!

No. The new W209 CLK55 is still based on the normally aspirated 5.5L V8 (~369hp), while the E55 will get roughly the same base motor PLUS the help of the Kompressor. Although MB claims the E55 develops less power than the SL55, many believe it's purely marketing, and in fact, the E55 is faster than the SL55 and will develop 496hp and 515 ft-lb torque. A recent Car & Driver article tested the new E55 at a 0-60 time of 4.3s!

I've noticed that Mercedes-Benz's 0-100km/h times are almost always slightly slower than what the magazines say. I'm kinda confused about my 0-60mph time for my W210 E55?

100kph is 62 mph and some small fraction. Therefore it takes longer to reach 100kph than 60mph. BTW, standing start acceleration isn't that important IMO.
