E320 Bluetec MPG increase when you cross 5000 miles

This one really caught me by surprise today. As I have been bragging I drive a lot, I finally got payback today on my 07 Bluetec, delivery was 6/29.

I usually average 31.8 on my way to work and 29.8-30.5 mpg max on the way home due to traffic conditions. Today on my way home I crossed 5000 miles and my mpg started creeping up, I was still 28 miles from home; the mpg very quickly shot up from around 30 to 34+; this leads me to believe the mpg will be even better on my next drive to the office on Monday. I was not aware this was programmed into the vehicle and was sort of startled by the sudden increase in mpg for my same lead foot driving. Perhaps forum experts on this will be able to explain MB break-in settings.

I wouldn't get my hopes up. I have a 2005 E320 CDI with 50,000 miles on it and I still get the same mileage you get, between 29 and 32mpg depending on which way I'm going.

Perhaps it was a temporary malfunction . I'll find out today and report back tonight.

I have been getting a minimum of 31mpg between trips to the pump.

Update: On the way to work yesterday the maximum mpg was 33.8mpg driving at just under 80mph and averaged around 33mpg, which is still great. It is possible I obtained a higher mpg last friday due to a sudden drop in atmospheric temperature from 90's to 60's.

Ain't nothing like this "programmed into your vehicle."

Bottom line I am happy with the increased mpg; it must have something to do with vehicle break in. Diesels usually take longer to break in.

Mnymaker,

29-32 mpg seems low, my friend! I have an 05 CDI with 75k miles on it an am getting 34 mpg, mostly highway driving at speeds near 70 mph.

Of course, factors such as tire pressure, fuel flow, etc, will impact mpg.

I'm happy, but it gets better

I took delivery of my 08 E320 Bluetec on 8/3 and now have just over 2000 miles. I'm getting over 30 mph with a leadfoot (highway over 80 mph) and it's been very hot therefore running A/C constantly.

I'm hoping that milage climbs somewhat now that break in period is wrapping up.

As stated earlier in this thread, my milage crept up by 2-3mpg after I crossed 5000 miles.
