Can the MPG computer be calibrated for accuracy?

I just returned from a road trip, and my car says I got 28.6 mpg. This would be great news for a powerful V-8 if it were only true. When I added up the fuel receipts and divided into the miles driven, I actually got 25.4 mpg. This is an error of 12.5%.

How does the car measure the fuel flow, and can this measuring device be adjusted?

I've rented various cars that have some sort of MPG calculator and they're all off. I think the reason is that they aren't accurate in every single driving situation. If I had to guess in which situations its not accurate I'd think sitting at a stop, and maybe coasting.

My intown is about 5% high. AFAIK on my old C the tech could go in and put in an adjustment. When I checked with my SA I was informed that MB has severely restricted the SW access in the cars. It therefore might take one of those specials DAS laptops that the roving special techs carry. Get in good with your SA and maybe he'll let you know next time one of those comes in and then its GL.

Unless of course one of the techs on this board know how and are willing to share the neccessary steps involved.

This adjustment for the instrument cluster settings would not need any special access codes on DAS (checked for the latest model, should not be more restricted on earlier models).

Thanx DB. Do you have the steps involved? The Techs can't seem to figure it out.

Should be straightforward, for W211 from 06/2006 onwards you would find the Kl-instrument cluster menu, control unit adaptations, instrument cluster computer adaptations, fuel consumption correction coefficient (I'm not using English menus, this should give a rough idea anyway).

You can directly set the correction value or increment or decrement it from sort keys.

I cannot believe they were unable to find this, must be that they were not willing to adapt it from the default.
