All MBs have some IR reflecting glasses but there also is an enhanced option, option code 596, similar to the one on the W221 (standard on S550 and onwards, you may not know about it as an option in the US then), this is a laminated glass with a special film in-between. I assume this code is not available in the US, but you can always check from the data cards of your car.

596 is not a standard option on W211's in the U.S. Whether it can be put into NetStar as a special order and produced that way I don't know.

Don't know if you were referring to my post but I said the infrared and noise suppressing glasses are standard on a W221, from S420CDI onwards, then on US cars too. I did not say they are standard on a W211 (nothing wrong with your post as such). On the W221 the code is 595 when the glasses are standard and 596 when an option, don't know why this.

What they do is they protect the car against warming up from sun shine, better than the standard glasses. In addition these glasses reduce external noise, making the car more quiet inside.

The other unfortunate "benefit" to this special glass is that it greatly reduces the effectiveness of a radar detector.

We have a 07 GL450 with infrared glass and it does seem to keep the cabin cooler. It has little or no tint however and I like the way blue tint sport glass looks compared to IR glass. Cyclerider, the IR glass has 3 areas that is not IR treated in spots that radar detectors are normally placed

Me too.

I think the Valentine One, which also reads radar signals from the sides and rear, would be hampered.

Actually not only radar detectors but it also affect cell phone use in the car if the phone is not using the external car antenna (BT SAP or sitting on the cradle).

Yes, there are openings on the windscreen, those are not made for radar detectors but radar detectors don't know that
I mean they can fully make use of those openings but they were made for other purposes.
