Motor starting to sound like a diesel... anyone have this problem? what could it be?

Smile Motor starting to sound like a diesel... anyone have this problem? what could it be?
Thanks for the help guys, my motor starts to sould like a diesel truck, not too loud, but deffenetly does not sound like when it was new...

Anyone have the same problem/?

Just getting cold outside and things change.. Does it just sound like this on start up? I know the V6 merc motors will tick even my BMW has a ticking sound its perfectly normal.


If anything open the hood and on idle your motor shouldnt be shaking or moving.. If its shaking or moving causing a sound then get your engine mounts replaced.

Could be the lifters being noisier when its colder out now.

So is it more of a tick tick tick sound or clacking? More vibrations felt in the cabin or still smooth?

If your cabin is filled with vibrations then could be motor mounts.

its like a diesel sound kinda thing... like....


tac tac tac tac tactactactactac...


its like i can hear the motor more, butn not in a nice way... there is no vibrations on the cabin.....

Since there are no vibrations, I think it is safe to say your motor mounts are fine.

It might just be the lifters getting noisier. Did this just happen out of the blue one day or did you notice it was a gradual thing?

I notice this same exact sound in my 07 E350. I just assumed it was the normal sound of the engine.

I can hear it inside... it does it sometimes louder than other times it seems...


really?? your E350 ssounds like this....? its like a little truck, lol... My moms E class 1996 has the 230 motor, and it does not sound like a little truck....

You didn't mention how many miles you have. Are you maybe overdue for a timing chain or timing belt?
Did you check your oil level?

MBs use timing chains, which almost never need to be replaced I believe. There isn't a "schedule" to replace that.
